I was looking through some old janes sims on ebay and saw u.s. navy fighters '97. Have any of you guys every played this game? The seller said it would work with Xp, but i never trust the word of someone trying to sell me something. The game is only 2.95, is it worth it? I know this is a dedicated USAF board, but i figured this would be the best place to get a response.........thanks

I've played it but went to Fighters Anthology which incorporates all the a/c in Navy Fighters. You should be aware that the graphics are quite dated; I also doubt it will run on winXp. Much like USAF, if it is coded in C, winXp does not recognize it. But again, how can you go wrong at 2.95. \:\)

Hey flanker.............

I really don't care much about the graphics of a sim.........i am much more interested in realistic gameplay. How realistic was U.S. navy fighters '97? Did each plane have its own personality or were all planes basically the same. By the way, the seller said he played the game on xp, take that for what its worth.

realism wasn't exactly the key..

USN Fighters was great fun to play, but quite basic

I don't think each plane had it's own characteristic. It seemed that each plane used a common platform. It wasn't overly realistic such as Il-2/FB or F4AF but it was just fun.

Boy, this brings back the memories! This is the one that got me started on simming. The manual was great and very informative. As already said, the flight models were basic and the avionics were simplified but great fun overall. Compared to USAF you will find the graphics a bit primitive. FWIW, I couldn't get it to run under 98 let alone XP.

USNF '97 might work under XP.

I've recently dug out "Fighters Anthology" which is USNF'97, Marine fighters expansion for USNF, ATF, NATO fighters expansion for ATF all bundled together in one program and it works fine (well the graphics go a little funny at low-res) on both my XP systems.

I can't imagine that FA's code is updated much from USNF97...

The planes have differing performances, but don't vary hugely.

It's ugly as hell (it was never a looker even when it was new. USNF was roughly contemporary with F-14 fleet defender and overlord), but fun- the missions and campaigns are well-designed.

Sure, if the graphics won't bother you because it is an older game, I reccomend it. However I would go with fighters anthology because it includeds all of the aircraft(i think a hundred or so?) from the games RFT mentioned as well as all of their maps and missions. Plus i've played that with no problems on winXP. I'm a Jane's man and those were good years when Jane's were making simulations frequently. However, I think USNF put out by EA was my first combat flight simulator.(btw, i have Jane's usnf97, does anyone know if this was the the same game??) Seeing how these were my first, there maybe a nostalgic factor as these brought a lot of joy. However, these games to me were and still are great fun to play. There maybe a little nostalgia for me but that aside, they still were great games with a great feel to them. Fighters Anthology is the way to go. Though no 3D acceleration, there's a great variety of things to do. From Dogfighting, ground attacks, B-1s and B-2 boming runs, to carrier operations with aircraft from a few different erras of jet aircraft! Also has a detailed mission editor. Well i'll be quiet now, you can see how much i love these Jane's game. Oh, as mentioned before, Jane's also gave GREAT manuals filled with game info as well as a great source in itself of the world's aircraft, flight maneuvers and info on the basic principles of flight. Okay I'm done.
