I found my old copy of JSF(Joint Strike Fighter) in my dust files.Thought Id give her a spin.I never really fully played this sim because TAW caught my eye but I always thought from what I played of it JSF was decent and it models 2 jets(X-32 and X-35).Its much like TAW in some respects minus the WARGEN campaign system. The terrain system was used in the later game Project IGI a FPS shooter. Its got a decent campaign.Anyway it runs perfectly on Windows XP.Currently Im trying to see if I can get it to run in 3dfx Voodoo mode with a glide wrapper. No luck yet.Itsupports up to like 1280X1024 resolution and has a working clickable cockpit.Heres a page with screenshots.

I liked JSF a lot! What I was surprised about was how nice it looks even in software mode. In Win XP, I've gotten it to run in 1900x1200 mode...but it crashes to desktop after a few minutes. But once I put it into compatability mode, it runs great! However, its limited to 1600x1000...which still looks good! I haven't found any way to get it to run in Glide at all. But considering how nice software mode looks...

One of the few games that gave a great sense of speed at low altitude.

Single most innovative part of this one:
Eject and stay with your pilot till he lands. You can then walk around and hold a 9mm pistol with a single clip that you can fire!

I have this sim as well, but can no longer locate the manual. So for me its more of a hit or miss when it comes to remembering what key stroke does what...

That would have been cool if there'd been a SAR aspect to the sim, which is integral to the fighter pilot experience. They had planned a VTOL/STOVL version, but I guess it all evaporated. A pilot mentioned that it greatly overdid the buffeting during just non-aggressive AoA turn, and I was quite bothered by a mention that there was no multitarget-multimissile TWS firing or shoot-lists. Is that true? Does the sim run in D3D or just 3dfx & software modes?

I thought it was cool but remember one REALLY annoying thing was..if you went too low, too fast it'd automatically take control away from you..or something like that? It pee'd me off enough that I never bought it..

I still miss the D.I.D days..I wonder how things would have been if they stayed around..

with the F22 in active service now..Im surprised there's no heavy duty sim of that coming up..I guess most of its still classified though

Not only are the specs classified, half of its capablities are classified! They don't even want people to know the half of what it's capable of other than shooting down planes without being seen.

No D3D. Just 3dfx and software.

IIRC there was a way of turning that off.

a key allowed to dactivate ground avoidance system...

I remember I've read that the real one had a similar system in development that was supposed to be used on training to avoid accidents...

What I wanna know is this...

When the F-22 was announced the winner, there was a tidal wave of F-22 games. How come the same thing didn't happen with the F-35?

One word...timing. By the time the F-35 was declared the winner in the JSF competition, the detailed single aircraft study sim genre was pretty much considered dead by developers.

As a secondary reason (perhaps), the F-35 in a lot of ways will not be that much different in capability from the F-22 (from a commerical simulation standpoint). Except for the VTOL version of course.

I love JSF one of my fav flight sim`s of all time. The campaigns are great,I thought the photos of the targets was a nice touch. The only problem with the game was the lack of stand off weapons. There are no Mavs so you have to fly right over a hot zone and drop JDAM`s! Was kinda risks but fun \:\)

Also it has some quality music which I listen to regularly on the way into college.PS the F-35 will be replacing the F/A-18 and F-16 eventually so it will do all the grunt work when the F-22 clears up the skies over hostile air space.

I had a lot of fun when JSF first came out. The triangular shaped box is pretty cool too.

I just re-installed it again myself, yearned for some simple pick up and play sims. Still love the way it looks. I was hoping there'd be some mod comunity activities going on but alas no such thing as far as I know. I wonder why the game never got more atention from the community.
