There are has been a lot of chat lately on these boards reference peoples favourite old sims etc. It got me thinking quite a bit. You see over the years I have had most Flight sims. Most I have kept. I have even just built a retro pc just to get some of them working.

My all time favourite was a Digital Integration sim called " F16 Combat Pilot" on the amiga, and later on PC. This had a real dynamic campaign but no external views of your aircraft. By god it was good.

Now I have just got another of my favourites up and running, TORNADO with Desert Storm addon. Great. \:\) \:\) Here is a pic of my Flight Sim (combat) collection. Just a drop in the ocean of all my titles.

Full collection includes :

Most of my oldies (not that I had many anyway) I purged a few years ago.

BTW - In your pic, to the right of the CFS-2 box, is that a Falcon 4.0 BOOK ? It kinda looks like a book to me, but I suppose it is the box because the manual wasn't that big? Just wondering...

Cheers

Mr B, That is the manual that came with my Falcon 4. It came with map and keycard and pilot handbook etc. But that is the manual, and the best I have ever seen.

Sweet merciful crap ! I had no idea it was that big (my Falcon 4.0 came in a jewel case). No wonder people rave about it.

Here's my current flight sim collection, not a whole lot of nostalgia:
- Falcon 4.0
- Hornet Korea
- Jane's F-15
- CFS-2 (and the Vietnam Air War expansion)
- Flight Simulator 2004
- LOMAC
- Enemy Engaged - Apache Havok
- Gunship!
- European Air War
- Team Apache
Of these, I hardly ever play EAW, Gunship!, Team Apache and EEAH.

Flight sims which I've had over the years but ditched:
- Flight of the Intruder
- Falcon 3.0
- USNF
- USNF '97
- That MiG-29 sim by Novalogic
- Commanche Gold
- Jane's IAF
- Fly!
- Flying Corps Gold

I've gotten rid of about half the sims I've ever owned .

Cheers

Mr B

I have the binder edition of F4 that was only around for a couple of months at best. Same pages as that manual, but with holes in a binder and tabbed dividers. Map and CD were in a plastic pouch in the back. Probably the definitive manual for a flight sim.

Even Flanker 2, released 6 months later, had a nice big manual that dwarfed LOMAC's, even though LOMAC features 4 complete planes not in Flanker 2!

I have a lot of the same ones you have but I was wondering about your take on one that I never picked up. What did you think of F-16 Aggressor? I'm a guy that doesn't have enough time to get into a study sim what with family obligations and such (which is why most are sitting on the shelf gathering dust). How would you rank the graphics and difficulty level? Would it run on XP and does it support direct3D or OpenGL? I've seen conflicting information on this. I know its kind of taboo around here to mention, but I thought Eurofighter Typhoon was actually pretty good in the graphics/flight model department (love the rain on the windshield and the snow). If it had only been a tad more sophisticated and allowed you to create your own missions, start from the hanger, etc.

I played it a couple of years ago and thought it was a lot of fun. It held my interest better than Eurofighter Typhoon. The avionics were not realistic at all (in other words very simple and easy)but the graphics were good for the time. The missions were fun and challenging but not overly difficult. I haven't tried it yet on XP, maybe I'll do that this weekend.

Thanks for the reply mbeaver. Maybe I'll have to pick that one up for the sake of completeness. I'm still waiting for the "ultimate" flight sim (obviously in my humble opinion) ;\) My system's a dog but I try to buy all the flight sims anyway to support the developers and think that one day I might be able to upgrade my system (as in Lock-On). It's strange but the last time I upgraded my system was probably the worst time for flight sims. 3Dfx had recently disappeared off the face of the Earth, windows XP came out and there was a long lapse before the next big flight sim came out. Where did that leave me? Well, I like the relative stability of XP so I don't really want to give that up. Glide doesn't play nice with XP anyway (I now have a GForce card) so that lets out most of the older sims that would play well on my processor (1GHz \:\( )and my system isn't fast enough for the new ones like Lock-On. I exist in sort of a flight sim Twilight Zone with Eurofighter Typhoon, WOV (on low settings), SFP1 (low settings) F/A-18 Precision Strike Fighters (come-on GraphSim, update this beast and I don't mean Iraqi Freedom \:D ), Jetfighter V (avionics suck but the graphics are intriguing), Jane's F/A-18 (didn't grab me, although no offense to the flight sim purists, I can appreciate why you like it so much) and Falcon 4 (its a beauty but there's no way I'm going to be able to devour that elephant anytime soon). I guess I'd have to say that Jane's USAF was the closest anyone came to making a "perfect" sim for my needs. Too bad it was half-baked and abandoned. Slikk has done a great job keeping it alive but that XP problem is way more than just the drop-down menus for me. I don't have the heart to go back to win98SE and I'm too lazy to double boot  so the wait continues. OK, I'm done feeling sorry for myself ;\) Carry On

Smart, F16 agressor is not bad for its type. It is not a hard core sim, but plays nice and smooth on your type of system. The souns and views are good. The weapons are good. Its not a bad sim. I like it. It runs good on XP by the way.

My personal opinion on F16 Agg is I liked it a lot. Great sim, excellent flight model, fun game not too complicated. Dogzero1, you got rid of your Amiga? I still have my original A1000 from 1986! F-16 Combat Pilot is one of the best sims ever! I liked that "in cockpit only" view and the incoming missiles were the fastest. What about the night missions? It was really pitch black at night! Tell me which modern sim models that? What a shame DI went down the tubes \:\(

Can anyone fill me in about SVGA Harrier and AV-8B Harrier Assault ?

I miss on them completely in the previous decade. I heard Flying Nightmares was suppose to be the modern version but it got canned.

Thanks

Holy Mackeral Pretzel. I'd say that just about covers 'em all. If they ever want to start a flight sim museum, you're the man ;\)
How many years did it take for you to collect all of those?

Wow, thought I was bad, looking at that collection had made me realise how many I have got rid of in the past. I too owned most of them at one time or another. I also notice you have 2 of the same titles in some cases. Is that for the sake of being a collector?

Hello,
There has been times I thought of throwing the boxes out and just keep the CDs and manuals to save space. Id proly regrit it later if I have done so.

Some of the double ups are Mac ver as stated or collecting series like Longbow, Longbow Gold, Longbow 2 and LB Anthologie.

The collection stared in the early 80`s like my memebership here # 188 \:\)

The bottom right is a book collection of fltsim Strategy guides.

I enjoy visting http://www.migman.com on-line flight sime Museum. You can check out the free section.

Cheers !

Dogzero, you haven't got the Binder edition of F4?! Heh, even I have that one, and I live in Romania!

:p

I'm not gonna read this topic anymore, or I'll burst into tears.

:D No I do not have the binder edition. But what I do have is 1 brand new Big boxed Falcon 4 still sealed for collection sake. I also have 1 brand new boxed sealed Flight of the Intruder (with Novel and maps etc), F19 Stealth Fighter and F117A (Amiga Editions) and one brand new Janes F/A18 still sealed in its box.

Just to add, I have just purchased a brand new Amiga A500 still sealed and in absolute mint (as new, as it has not even been started up) condition. Bought it from a guy on Ebay who just happened to mention that he had a brand new one during a game transaction. He also threw in a pristene Amiga F16 Combat Pilot all boxed and like new.

Sweet merciful god... You guys are serious collectors... \:D
In the '80s there were no "legal" games where I'm from; everything was copied as they weren't sold anywhere. The thing did not really changed much in the early '90s as well; but I'd love to have an original f-117 for PC... (By the way; I bought most of my copied games since then.)

Gentlemen, I stand in awe of your dedication and shelf space.

I've had most of these at one time or another, but the real world just keeps getting in the way, or rather the sim boxes get in the way of the real world.

The first flight sim I played was on a computer in school in the 1980's - it was an Apache sim, but I can't remember the name. After that it was F-19 on a friend's PC and loads of Microprose, Lucasarts and DI sims on my old Amiga before I got my own PC (since upgarded/replaced several times).

My collection now comprises:

Janes Fighters Anthology (I got rid of USNF, Marine Fighters, USNF97 and ATF)
Janes IAF
Janes F-15
Janes F/A-18
Janes USAF
Janes Longbow 2
IL2 & IL2 Forgotten Battles
Strike Fighters Gold
Flanker 2.0
LOMAC
F-22 ADF
F-14 Fleet Defender (the only Microprose sim I've got left - really sad)
CFS2
Falcon 4
EAW
F-16 Fighting Falcon
Hind
Plus an old CD with a lot of cracked versions of really old games including Facon 3.0 and the addons on that I haven't got time or tech skills to see if they work on my current system.

Thaks for the memories guys, time to start trawling Ebay methinks!

Allen

My system:
Packard Bell I-Xtreme 2600
P4 2.66ghz
512mb RAM
120gb hard drive
Geforce4
Win XP Pro
Saitek Cyborg Evo

As a follow up on this:

I was not able to get F-16 Aggressor to run on XP with my 9800 Pro, however, it ran fine on XP with my GF4 ti4200.

Here's my contribution to the sim hall of fame, my collection could probably get lost down the back of Pretzels sofa. Seem to be boxless on many of them. Anyone notice F-16 Aggressor in there? *hangs head in shame* sorry Dogzero I thought it was awful.

Ahh I spotted Aces of the Pacific... that one was great. I think at the time I played it 'Boo! Boo! Black Sheep' was aired here in germany.
I remember that I loved the menu music.
I didn't like Aces over Europe for some reason though. I think I thought the planes were too hard to fly compared to the F4U.
Oh the memories \:\) .

Puck and Pretzel... those are truly amazing collections. I wish I had taken care of mine as well. Maybe I should stop ripping the cartonage open with my teeth as soon as a new sim arrives \:D

I have recently been playing IAF (ISREALI AIR FORCE) on my retro pc. It was really quite good. My retro pc has been built to be able to play most of the old sims (including dos titles).

I have built it using win98se, msdos 6.2 and have an old sb16 card, geforce 2 and voodoo 2 card. Seems to work an absolute treat on the old stuff like USAF, TAW, EF200, TORNADO, LONGBOW 1 AND 2, and even Chuck Yeagers Air Combat. \:D

Just an update folks, seeing that there is a bit of flight sim nostalgia rearing its head again.
I have increased my collection to 3 times the original post, pics below. I now have two more pc's, built in retro fashion from old ebay bought bits and stuff I had lying around from upgrades over the years. A pentium 100 with dos 6.22 for the really old stuff. And a Pentium 600 with a geforce 2 card and two voodoo 2's in sli format for the early win 95/98 flight sims.

I also have an amiga 500 and a 1200 for my growing collection of amiga flight sims. (favourites being Flight of the Intruder and F16 Combat Pilot).

All in all, my flight sim collection is starting to really grow now. I have been simming since 1985 (C64)and my love for sims is growing as I get older. I also have many Motorsport Sims and naval and space etc. But its Flight combat sims that float my boat.

ps, favourite medium age sim (early 90's to mid) is currently...... is........Tornado with dessert storm addon, I love it.

Anyways gotta go guys, back to modern times, a session in LOMAC Flaming Cliffs awaits.

ps...........merry christmas and a happy new year.

Man, it just makes me weep to see those pictures. I realize that at one time I owned probably 90 percent of what I've been seeing in those shelves, all of them bought brand new. Darn me and my non pack rat mentality... Since I travel a lot, I don't have time to use a retro desktop, so the adventure goes on. Check the 'Going historical' for updates.

Now I'm off to find 1942:PAW...

PUCK! Have you ever moved in the past 20 years! Hahah. I can say I have a great deal of the sims you've posted, but almost none of the boxes! IMPRESSIVE! You should put a velvet rope in front of that and call it art.

Here's a pic of my collection. It's a total of 66 titles and their add-ons. I just pulled them all out of boxes in my basement for the purpose of taking this picture.

On the top row, facing forward, are the sims I currently have installed. All the rest are "nostalgiaware".

I included a tank sim (Spectrum Holobyte's "Tank") and a sub sim (Microprose's Silent Hunter II) but left out my space combat sims like all the Star Wars games and my two Freespace games (Freespace 2, by the way, still looks and plays great today though).

There are also a few titles that, for whatever reason, I can't find. I know I bought them but I can't find them in the boxes I thought they were in. These titles would include: F14 Fleet Defender and Eurofighter 2000.

Thanks, Pretzel.

Yes, I simply had to own all the add-ons for SWOTL. Loved that game.

My collection is nowhere near what yours is but I do notice some games in your collection that I at least tried before returning or trading in (Black Knight on your top shelf is a game I remember but returned for one reason or another).

I also have Megafortress as you do. I liked the game but never really got the hang of it. Found it hard to get through a mission alive.

Yeah, I had the early Jet Fighter game (bought the first 3 in the series). It was fun at the time. I thought JFIII gave a great sense of speed, especially at low altitude.

Hi guys,

This is my first post on this forum. I love flight sim nostalgia but I don't have anywhere near the number of classic sims as some of you have. Here are all the flight sims I've owned at some time or another (ones with * I have installed at the moment):

Flight Simulator 2000
FS2002 (Pro)
FS2004 + loads of add-ons *
CFS2
CFS3
DID F22 Air Dominance Fighter
Il2 Sturmovik
Il2 Forgotten Battles *
Lock On/Flaming Cliffs *
Strike Fighters Gold *

Sadly I don't have F22 anymore, the others I still have lying around somewhere. When I think of all the happy hours I spent on FS2000 and F22 particularly, it makes me feel very nostalgic.

I picked up Strike Fighters Gold for £5 in Game the other day and I'm thinking about getting Falcon 4 Allied Force soon as well - sounds like the best flight sim around at the moment.
