There are has been a lot of chat lately on these boards reference peoples favourite old sims etc. It got me thinking quite a bit. You see over the years I have had most Flight sims. Most I have kept. I have even just built a retro pc just to get some of them working.

My all time favourite was a Digital Integration sim called " F16 Combat Pilot" on the amiga, and later on PC. This had a real dynamic campaign but no external views of your aircraft. By god it was good.

Now I have just got another of my favourites up and running, TORNADO with Desert Storm addon. Great. \:\) \:\) Here is a pic of my Flight Sim (combat) collection. Just a drop in the ocean of all my titles.

Full collection includes :

Most of my oldies (not that I had many anyway) I purged a few years ago.

BTW - In your pic, to the right of the CFS-2 box, is that a Falcon 4.0 BOOK ? It kinda looks like a book to me, but I suppose it is the box because the manual wasn't that big? Just wondering...

Cheers

Mr B, That is the manual that came with my Falcon 4. It came with map and keycard and pilot handbook etc. But that is the manual, and the best I have ever seen.

Sweet merciful crap ! I had no idea it was that big (my Falcon 4.0 came in a jewel case). No wonder people rave about it.

Here's my current flight sim collection, not a whole lot of nostalgia:
- Falcon 4.0
- Hornet Korea
- Jane's F-15
- CFS-2 (and the Vietnam Air War expansion)
- Flight Simulator 2004
- LOMAC
- Enemy Engaged - Apache Havok
- Gunship!
- European Air War
- Team Apache
Of these, I hardly ever play EAW, Gunship!, Team Apache and EEAH.

Flight sims which I've had over the years but ditched:
- Flight of the Intruder
- Falcon 3.0
- USNF
- USNF '97
- That MiG-29 sim by Novalogic
- Commanche Gold
- Jane's IAF
- Fly!
- Flying Corps Gold

I've gotten rid of about half the sims I've ever owned .

Cheers

Mr B

I have the binder edition of F4 that was only around for a couple of months at best. Same pages as that manual, but with holes in a binder and tabbed dividers. Map and CD were in a plastic pouch in the back. Probably the definitive manual for a flight sim.

Even Flanker 2, released 6 months later, had a nice big manual that dwarfed LOMAC's, even though LOMAC features 4 complete planes not in Flanker 2!

I have a lot of the same ones you have but I was wondering about your take on one that I never picked up. What did you think of F-16 Aggressor? I'm a guy that doesn't have enough time to get into a study sim what with family obligations and such (which is why most are sitting on the shelf gathering dust). How would you rank the graphics and difficulty level? Would it run on XP and does it support direct3D or OpenGL? I've seen conflicting information on this. I know its kind of taboo around here to mention, but I thought Eurofighter Typhoon was actually pretty good in the graphics/flight model department (love the rain on the windshield and the snow). If it had only been a tad more sophisticated and allowed you to create your own missions, start from the hanger, etc.

I played it a couple of years ago and thought it was a lot of fun. It held my interest better than Eurofighter Typhoon. The avionics were not realistic at all (in other words very simple and easy)but the graphics were good for the time. The missions were fun and challenging but not overly difficult. I haven't tried it yet on XP, maybe I'll do that this weekend.

Thanks for the reply mbeaver. Maybe I'll have to pick that one up for the sake of completeness. I'm still waiting for the "ultimate" flight sim (obviously in my humble opinion) ;\) My system's a dog but I try to buy all the flight sims anyway to support the developers and think that one day I might be able to upgrade my system (as in Lock-On). It's strange but the last time I upgraded my system was probably the worst time for flight sims. 3Dfx had recently disappeared off the face of the Earth, windows XP came out and there was a long lapse before the next big flight sim came out. Where did that leave me? Well, I like the relative stability of XP so I don't really want to give that up. Glide doesn't play nice with XP anyway (I now have a GForce card) so that lets out most of the older sims that would play well on my processor (1GHz \:\( )and my system isn't fast enough for the new ones like Lock-On. I exist in sort of a flight sim Twilight Zone with Eurofighter Typhoon, WOV (on low settings), SFP1 (low settings) F/A-18 Precision Strike Fighters (come-on GraphSim, update this beast and I don't mean Iraqi Freedom \:D ), Jetfighter V (avionics suck but the graphics are intriguing), Jane's F/A-18 (didn't grab me, although no offense to the flight sim purists, I can appreciate why you like it so much) and Falcon 4 (its a beauty but there's no way I'm going to be able to devour that elephant anytime soon). I guess I'd have to say that Jane's USAF was the closest anyone came to making a "perfect" sim for my needs. Too bad it was half-baked and abandoned. Slikk has done a great job keeping it alive but that XP problem is way more than just the drop-down menus for me. I don't have the heart to go back to win98SE and I'm too lazy to double boot  so the wait continues. OK, I'm done feeling sorry for myself ;\) Carry On

Smart, F16 agressor is not bad for its type. It is not a hard core sim, but plays nice and smooth on your type of system. The souns and views are good. The weapons are good. Its not a bad sim. I like it. It runs good on XP by the way.

My personal opinion on F16 Agg is I liked it a lot. Great sim, excellent flight model, fun game not too complicated. Dogzero1, you got rid of your Amiga? I still have my original A1000 from 1986! F-16 Combat Pilot is one of the best sims ever! I liked that "in cockpit only" view and the incoming missiles were the fastest. What about the night missions? It was really pitch black at night! Tell me which modern sim models that? What a shame DI went down the tubes \:\(

Can anyone fill me in about SVGA Harrier and AV-8B Harrier Assault ?

I miss on them completely in the previous decade. I heard Flying Nightmares was suppose to be the modern version but it got canned.

Thanks

Holy Mackeral Pretzel. I'd say that just about covers 'em all. If they ever want to start a flight sim museum, you're the man ;\)
How many years did it take for you to collect all of those?
