I've noticed many private vendors in online marketplaces haven't gotten the memo, and are, for now, selling external HDDs at a reasonable price. If you need a backup HDD now and performance isn't paramount, you could buy an external 7200 RPM HDD and just take it out of its enclosure.

More sellers seem to be getting wind now however, so order one now before the externals triple in price as well.

Yeah, fortunately I had to buy a 2 tb external drive here in greece about 3 days after the floods, their price was the normal pre-flood one, unlike the internal HDDs which had their price increased almost instantly. Fortunately, because I checked the same store 2 days later and the same external HDD had an 60-80% increased price.

i went to walmart and the same 1 TB Seagate Drive (7200/32MBCache/SataII) was there at the same price i bought it for a year ago, but it was marked with a inventory dot on the Shelf tag, signifying that it was no longer being ordered, so once they are gone, they are gone, i think there was 2 left.

So some retailers (walmart, sams, etc), are selling off what they have and putting something else on the shelves in their spot.

I got two USB 2.0 Seagate 1.5 Gb drives drives last year at WM and paid 79 for them. Took them out of the enclosures and installed them internally for storage. They are 5900 RPM drives with 32Mb cache.
