Just curious as I know we have many folks who have astronomy as a hobby. Anyone tracking this when the asteroid passes earth who has a powerful enough telescope? I can't recall who, but someone here has posted some amazing amateur shots in the past. Would be neat to see some up close and personal.

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/asteroids/news/yu55-20111025.html

And of course, the normal news outlets bringing a bit of hysteria.

http://lightyears.blogs.cnn.com/2011/11/03/asteroid-to-pass-closer-to-earth-than-the-moon/?hpt=hp_t2

What would happen if an asteroid this size crashed into Earth?

It would result in a 4,000 megaton blast, magnitude 7.0 earthquake and - if it falls into the ocean - could cause a 70-foot high tsunami within 60 miles of the crash site, according to an expert at Purdue University.

As long as Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis are around we'll be ok.

Time to pracitce the old Duck and Cover routine again. If this thing hits close to you it would be about as useful now as it was then...

I don't know the speed of that Asteroid but given the way it's approaching I see it difficult it will change its orbit and impact our planet.
Here in Spain the media is saying it could hit our planet. What a bunch of idiots.

Well, if you look at that diagram, I figure about the time it gets to the edge of the circle representing the moon's orbit, gravity will take hold and yank it right on in.

We're doomed as doomed can be, just like always.

Cheers!

I just read somewhere that they believe it has actually started to decelerate.

That would be expected - after it passes Earth gravity is pulling it back towards Earth so it slows down.

I remember reading a detailed write up on this asteroid a few weeks ago. I think the expectation was that it could potentially impact Earth in the late 2030s depending on exactly how close this pass was. Presumably the they're still crunching the numbers on that.

Edit: I was totally wrong, this one isn't a threat for a century or more: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badast...h-on-november-8

At the distance and speeds the asteroid will pass by and earth's gravity will have little to no effect. I don't know the speed of that asteroid but I guess to be trapped by earth's gravity at that distance its speed had to be really slow about 3,000KM/h

Besides if the asteroid would be heading directly to Earth instead of slowing down it would accelerate due to earth's gravity and given the current trajectory I don't see why it should slow down.

I hope some great pictures are taken. Closer to Earth than the moon in some respect.
