Got to go on my first flying lesson a few weeks ago in a Piper Warrior III. Flew out of Republic Airport in Long Island, got to bring a guest too. It was AWESOME! Weather was perfect. My instructor was great. He walked me through start-up and how things work... I got to taxi around and take off. Followed the coast going west and flew over the Verrenzo Bridge, past the Statue of Liberty, and up the East River. Turned over Central Park and headed down the Hudson, back over the Verrenzo, east along the beach and landed. Can't wait to do it again. So the big question, reality vs flight sims. Obviously, you don't get the same sensation (wind/vibration) of what the plane is doing in a sim, but the basic principles are all there. I felt confident the entire time that I knew what I was doing. You just have to be way more delicate with the controls in real life. Using the rudder and toe brakes on the ground took some getting use to. The weirdest thing was feeling almost like the plane was suspended from a string at its center of balance. When a strong gust would blow, it felt like someone was shaking the tail side to side. Why do my hobbies keep getting more expensive?

Cool! Are you planning on following through to get your certificate? That looks like a fun (but challenging) place to learn how to fly. Here's a thread that follows my year long adventure of getting my PPL. Maybe some useful information for you: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3004133/Malibu43_s_Private_Pilot_s_Lic.html#Post3004133

Careful now, once you get flying in your blood you will never get it completely out of your system . Welcome to the addiction!

Very cool Pics Zeus! Thanks for posting the pics and your story. I can just imagine how NYC looks from up there at night. BTW I've got family that lives between the Throgsneck Bridge and Whitestone Bridge on the Queens side. I bet you flew right over them or very near them. Pescador

There have been a couple of us who recently received flight training and certification.
I have a log and sometimes humorous description of my training. You can search under oldgrognard and flight (make sure you check for 3 years back in the choices).
Funny how just taxiing is a new experience. Did you try to turn with the yoke at first?
Good for you on getting up there. It gets addicting. Good photos.
Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

Wow, that must have been fun. I didn't know one was still allowed to fly over Midtown Manhattan due to all the new security measures.

Congrats on your first lesson! What a feeling it is Nothing soothes my soul as a flight in a small plane on a nice day. One expensive hobby usually leads to another. My two most expensive ones are flying and collecting watches Once you have tasted flight, etc
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Thanks guys! Thought of another tidbit, after a few minutes my instructor told me to stop looking down at the instruments so much Are you planning on following through to get your certificate? I'm looking into how to balance what it will take financially. I know people say the best advice is to take the courses close to each other, but my wallet won't listen to me That looks like a fun (but challenging) place to learn how to fly. The toughest part to me, even though the instructor handled it all, was communicating with ATC. We flew through Farmingdale, JFK, Newark, and I believe a piece of LaGuardia. So there was a lot of radio chatter. ...between the Throgsneck Bridge and Whitestone Bridge on the Queens side. I bet you flew right over them or very near them. Nope, that's the north shore. We flew along the south shore. I asked about that though. My instructor said because the bridges and LaGuardia are so close to each other, they don't usually allow small planes in that area. I didn't know one was still allowed to fly over Midtown Manhattan due to all the new security measures. My original flight was actually scheduled for September, but was cancelled to due weather. It was better for me because we would have had to fly out to LI and not the city. When the UN is in session, NYC air space is restricted. Also, when the President is in town, which he was, he requires a 30 mile radius or restricted air space.

Nice. Definitely smart to keep your head up and on a swivel in that airspace. The NY area is extremely congested. Probably the tightest mix of IFR and VFR traffic I've ever experienced. Great photos and enjoy your future flights..!

How was the framerate? Lots of polys in a couple of those pics. Jason I was thinking of same thing; my frame rate dropped into single digits.
