I fed up being the bad , rivet counting guy to others...
I downloaded the Albatros D.Va template, from the Useful Materials page and started fiddling with it...
Also started a new Pat Wilson's RoF CG v.10.0, with Jasta 37, in September '17 and needed some skins to assign to my virtual squadmates...

Here is my first production, still early WiP, out of the default template more or less,
but featuring many little tiny historical details missing or even misinterpreted by the default game's template and often addopted by fellow skinners... nope

Jasta 37 Alb. D.V generic

Close up on details
Johannisthal style hood lacking crease, placards, checklist chart, weights table.
Also, cockpit instrument fastening rivets, V strut braces, (retrofitted, in not matching primer)...
(these machines were uprated D.V-s)

I used Rufe's Methuen codes-Resene matching, RGB values for the metal primer, with brighteness reduced by 20%...
Also alpha channel was treated to better represent primed metal reflectiveness than the original template's bare metal look.
What do you think?

Some more pics plus some WiP aces:

Taking off

Kurt Grasshof

Hans Waldhausen

Ernst Udet

Biff down
Featuring starboard side details: centerline stencil (never seen it on a RoF skin yet) cockpit instruments riveting (different from port)

Still lots to be done...
Some of the skins are semi historical, some had black spinner but...I couldn't find the spinner in motion location! duh
Now I know where it is at last...
More to come, with proper documentation photos this time, (more aces too)...
You feedback is most wellcome. wink

Thanks my friends! smile
Here are my last pics till next week...
I changed the lozenge, after suggestion by the guys over at RoF Forums,
using a pattern created by my friend Olham from OFF...

but I thought that the undersides especially were too fluorescent! wacky
(the underside crosses outline was not visible!)
So I found a compromise between the default and new one.
(the pics are under the same lighting conditions as before).
So what do you think of these:

Put some more work on those skins...
After a conversation with my friend BLOWHARD over at Simmers Paintshop, I made some corrections to my Udet's skin:

Scrubbed off the weights table stencil and tried a rudder covered with undersides lozenge...
The reference pics were not very revealing about the latter.
Your opinions please?

I was perusing the 777 forum last night, and ran across some guy posting about how it's not right to use a historical pilots skin, and
thus "pretend to be them". I think he went on about how it was disrespectful or some such.

About the stupidest post I've ever soon on a flight sim forum, and going back to the CombatSim Janes F15 days, that's saying a lot!!

Good job in the skin.

Huh? sigh That's basically the whole reason I sim - to feel a connection to those by-gone days and the heroes that flew these planes.

But...I think I can top that post. Many years ago on the Creative Assembly company board (mostly a bunch of immature kids) around the release of Rome Total War there was a thread posted - and I kid you not:

"What if a Roman Legion was at Gettysburg?"

confused

I'd like to ask a stupid question-what was the point of the "lozenge" paint pattern? It looks like it would be a HELL of a lot of work and time to paint the wings of these planes.

It looks awesome but......

Ahh...but the patterns weren't painted on - they were printed on large sheets! And the sheets were cut into strips and sewn on - saving time - and weight.

Just wondering, should the white be toned back a little? Great skins overall though. Would be proud to have them in game.

Bright colors and whites in particular, can be troublesome in RoF world.
If you are referring to the first bunch of pics it has been toned down since...
I'm using the "white" from the national markings as base...and I have even reduced the opacity by 15%.
Period photos reveal that Jasta 37 white was quite bright...
Here are a couple of good quality pics of Hamscher's D.III to compare...
(1. wheel cover in shade- 2. tailplane stripes to direct sunlight)

Beautiful work!
