I'll put up a clip later today of the Merlin sounds (cockpit, external, and flyby).
IMHO the internal cockpit Merlin sounds are good. The external Merlin start up is really good. External and flyby Merlin sounds are very disappointing.
Agree. The 109 sounds are very encouraging -- they really show what the game engine can accomplish. Likewise the Jafa sound mod. Buried deep inside Cliffs of Dover is a snarling Merlin sighing to get out!
I did do some fly by tests with the Spit and it's weird. Sometimes you can hear the Merlin sounds better (maybe the angle?) and other times it seems over taken by a IL2esq drone as the aircraft flys by.

It's KRT not Kurt
I usually get up about 2500ft and go flyby view and fly it like an r/c plane making passes rolls and such and I agree it's inconsistent but you also don't generally have that view IRL and unless you're at a display and you have the ground reflection you really don't hear the prop tips going supersonic as it passes you and that's also part of the Merlin sound that's familiar as well. For movie makers I imagine that much of the in game sound would be dubbed over anyway.

Here's a quick clip of the Merlin sounds in the new patch! As I mentioned earlier, I think the start up is very good, both in the cockpit and external. In cockpit sound is good, too, but I'm disappointed in the external Merlin sound and the flyby. We've all heard Spits and Hurries in airshows, plus the iconic Merlin engine sounds in a number of movies. I was really hoping that Cliffs of Dover would stir the heart in the same manner! See what you think:

I'm hoping that the devs will continue tweaking the Merlin sounds. They were justifiably proud enough to feature the 109 sounds in their little preview clip last Friday, but I suspected something was amiss when the Spit/Hurri sounds were omitted from a Battle of BRITAIN preview. This could be an indication that they, too, know what a Merlin engine truly sounds like and for the time being the means to accurately reproduce it with the CoD sound engine is eluding them. Even as good as Jafa's sound mod is, the Jafa flyby still has that Hoover vacuum cleaner swoosh to it.
Maybe if they went 64-bit............... JUST KIDDING!!!!
I'm just glad they overhauled the sound engine, I was always disappointed with how it would have a compression/strange bending effect on flybys and in other areas. Even with Jafa's great sounds, the engine always pulled it like taffy and just killed it for me. They have finally fixed this 'effect' and all the sounds, sound great.
Yeah all the other sounds outside the 109 sound a little bland and generic in a way but defiantly going in the right direction, and besides it looks positive that down the road if people like Jafa want to tweak it with their own sounds the engine will handle it much better.

The start and ground idle sound fine, as soon as you open the throttle it all goes Pete Tong. On fly by, once the Spit has flown over the camera position it starts to sound very 'radial engin'ish'. Also, any chance of more exhaust flame, goto love an overprime start. 1C sound chaps, please PM me.

Harry, You are right about that part of the merlin. I hadn't listened or flown the spit from takeoff, just on flybys, yes big improvement.

Yes but an early Merlin with 3 bladed prop sounds very differrent to a 4 bladed later Merlin that we are generally more familiar with.
Great video and interesting info re 3-blade vs 4-blade prop sounds. The Merlin sounds were certainly affected to a degree by the engine modifications to boost horsepower, but they still sounded like Merlins!
This is the Hawker Hurricane that I knew well from local air shows until it was tragically lost in a hangar fire in '93:
I would be THRILLED if CoD could reproduce this engine sound. Currently, the external in-flight and flyby Merlin sound in CoD does not, even with the latest patch.
