I'd like to start flying full switch servers online, but wow this sim or more complex than IL2. I can't get off the ground without sometime blowing or overheating on the engine. What am I doing wrong? Are there any guides or videos that are plane specific showing how to start and fly the planes safely?

I sat on the runway last night for 30 min firing up the g50, FINALLY got it started after watching a youtube video. Wow the prop pitch and mixture settings are very picky. But on full power takeoff I blew some stuff out of the motor. I had all rads open I don't know what went wrong.

Very challenging but rewarding once I got her all fired up and warmed up. I love this steep learning curve smile

Belgium but not in Flanders
First try the Tiger Moth it is easy and then try a more complex fighter plane. Or you could first try without the temperature management then add this complexity.

It is a fun game once you master it so rewarding.

Also each plane is different.

the radials in CoD need to work properly 200-250 cylinder temperature, yes, samll range biggrin . So its a much longer warm up time than the liquid cooled engines in game.
You first have to activate the tempgauge to show the temp of one of the cylinders , by default the tempreading is set to none.
You will find the tempgauge and cylinder reading selector switch on the front panel.

the G.50 is a dog perfromance wise, the CoD one even more than the real one wink
BUT, it teaches you very well all the kind of CEM in game:
It has a
CSP
manual mixture
trimm at all three axis
its trickey to keep in good tempcondition

Hello Kestral,

The start-up checklists are worth a look, although they are probably more accurate than the sim they do give a lot of help for the procedures:

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3342810/Aircraft_Operations_Checklists.html

As you've probably already found, there are some good youtube guides on at least starting up. Jimbo has a good channel to search through here:

As for general advice, as mentioned it helps to get grounded on one aircraft first and then just learn the oddness of each as you go. Here's what I do on the Spit II

- Fuel cocks on
- Magnetos both on
- Throttle 15%
- Ignite!
- Wait for 3 or 4 minutes for the oil to warm up
- Step up the throttle until it sounds Merliny, say 30%
- Open water radiator to 50% ( a bit early, but it's just to be cautious)
- Taxi out and take off
- Adjust prop pitch to keep RPM's about 23/24
- Watch temps and open/close water radiator as I go - if feeling lazy and in no rush then leave it fully open
- Lean the mixture when getting higher, but otherwise don't worry for now

Anyone else got better tips or a link to a reference not mentioned?

one dont have to set magnetos manuall in CoD. As soon you hit ignition (ctrl+I) , thy are set automaticly on on.

True, but I use them as a placebo, sort of like a fisher-price activity center for simmers smile

in general:
open fuel cocks (two engined planes for every engine) if available and as best dont touch the fuelcocksystem in the Bf110s, it needs some tweaking

set mixture to rich, means in british planes 0%, in italian planes 100% !

set throttle to around 10%

ignition (ctrl + I)

give the engine a little bit to settle.

Than warm up, as said, the radials to 200 Cylinder Temperature

Thanks guys I'll keep working at it. I'll start with the Tigermoth and try the Spit II as well. Are any of the 109s or german planes good starter planes? I know in IL2 most german planes have a lot of auto features so you don't have to mess with prop pitch.

But boy was that g50 fussy. Every lever had to be in the PERFECT spot for it to start.

The 109s are easy planes to fly, but none have the auto-prop pitch yet, so you will have to learn PP. Startup is as follows:

Fuel cock on
Set prop pitch to full fine (12:00 on the dial)
Hit "I" to start

open Oil Radiators to 50%
open Water Radiators to 1/2
Set elevator trim to just barely nose up (helps with nosing over on takeoff)
Increase throttle to 100% (1.35 ATA) to takeoff

Get your gear up before you pass 250kph, or they'll stick in the down or half-down position. I generally back the throttle down right after liftoff, and don't drop the prop pitch until after the wheels are up. Once you have 2 red lights, you can go full bore.

Have fun!
