Hi folks,
Appolgies in advance this probably been asked many times before but here goes

System specs out dated see sig but im wanting too upgrade soon anyway. Not a full PC by any means i rather do it myself but im on a tight budget.
Way i see it is i got 2 really good options.
1. Rebuild with an AMD quad or Hex core CPU motherboard, ram an OS
2. Rebuild with an Intel i5 2500k, Motherboard, ram an OS

At what point with increasing RAM will il2 COD really start too sing. Is the amount of Ram going to impact performance that much or is it mostly on the CPU.

I heard some horror stories of people having absolutly stonking computers an this been a dog to run.

Thanks in advance
Grom

I went from a Q9450 2.66Ghz (o/c'd to 3.06) and 8Gb of DDR 2 800 with a GTX570 to an i5 2500 at 4.3GHz (easy oc on that cpu) with a H60 cpu cooler and 16 Gb DDR3 at 1300. I kept the 570.

Everything else I run (RoF, IL2 HSFX 5,FSX, FC2) sings on high settings but CoD is still a problem child. In my experience throwing hardware at this sim isn't a cure all. I would wait for the patch and go from there if I were you.

Hi Gromet,

I'm no computer guru (far from it!) but here's some thoughts I have regarding PC requirements for CoD:

1. RAM: CoD is a 32-bit program so it can't utilize more than 4 Gigs. That said, because of video editing that I do, I run Win 7 64-bit and 12 Gigs of RAM which do get used by the 64-bit editing programs I use. However, when running CoD (and support programs such as TrackIR5, Voice Commander, Ventrilo, etc. -not to mention all the other background processes) I've noticed via Task Manager that frequently over 4.5 Gigs of RAM are being used. Got me to thinking........if I were running Win 7 32-bit and had only 4 Gigs of RAM onboard, would that be a bottleneck that would affect CoD performance?

2. My CPU is likewise outdated and screaming for overclocking. Unfortunately, Gateway saw fit to lock out the BIOS of my FX6801-01. Although hacks abound on the Internet to break this lock, I haven't gone down this road. When I had an earlier generation Nvidia GTX285 video card with 1 Gig of VRAM it played CoD very well, albeit with medium settings and staying out of London. Now I'm running two mid-performing 560 Ti cards in SLI with everything maxed, I'm getting good (30 - 60 fps, not excellent though) frame rates at 1680 x 1050 native res. Clearly my CPU is the bottleneck since each card is only running 45 - 50% instead of nearly maxed out. BTW, a single Nvidia 560 Ti card with 1 Gig of VRAM gives EXCELLENT bang for the buck performance. I ran one 560 Ti card for a week before going SLI and it ran CoD very well at higher detail levels than my former GTX285 card.

3. Nvidia vs Radeon? I dare not go there. I'd rather post inflammatory religious cartoons. The going thought is to have a minimum of 1 gig of VRAM, though.

Good luck. I look forward to what others here have to say. Keep us posted on what you put together and how it turns out.

At the moment it's pretty pointless to spec out a system with the sim's engine being rewritten.

Save your cash until the new graphics engine is released - at that time we'll be able to ge a good idea on system requirements, and you'll maximize your bang for buck.

What WW2 Fighter pilots say about Angels and Airspeed:

"Nice job of getting down to the basics - love your choice of a cover!" Col. Clarence 'Bud' Anderson

"I have enjoyed reading angels and airspeed, it should prove good reading for all interested in combat tactics and their application related to the fluid air environment and state of technology in WWII years. All the best as you make it available." - Col. Charles McGee - Tuskegee Airman

NEVER ENGAGE STUPID.

I want a big bang for as few bucks as possible, interesting to hear it wont use much more than the 4 gig of ram in specs.
This new FM1 APU from AMD cheap an cheerful. But is it any good?
I know there is no real future proofing with these things at all, this PC was out of date before I built it.
But that been said i want it too last as long if not longer than this did.
Also want too bare in mind other sims in my collection RoF and DCS BS are two prime examples.
Yes they run rather well considering the age of the Motherboard and very limited memory bandwidth available.
But at much reduced settings infact RoF kinda stuttery and unstable.
Its the above I want to illiminate completely across the board.
System wont be built for a few months yet at least, Possibly not even till new year.
Been kinda engaged in an MMO for last few years so i totally lost track of whats good kit an whats bad kit.
Thanks for the replies

You'll need a new GPU while you're at it. Preferably at least a Nvidia 570 or AMD HD6850. No good having a top-end CPU which the GPU can't keep up with.

Yea just been looking actually, at moment its a Radeon Hd5570 cheapo replacement for my old GF8500Gt 1gb that died on me, well actually the fan died on me attack so i had to whip out a quick replacment to keep things running.
Dont get me wrong this PC isnt a piece of crap its running il2 1946 very well modded at between 70 an 190 fps @ 1920x1080 everything is maxed. But that lovley new tech ive missed out on makes me wanna sob.
Ive even been looking at an SSD. Its basicly gonner be a case of getting it all running with a good resonably upto date system then putting the expensive bits in as an when my wallet allows. Beast of a video card an possibly an SSD.
Tommorow ill go pick up a new case too, end the day this PC is still a nice computer, so i like too hand it off to my Dad. He not a simmer or gamer far from it but his old shuttle is well dead crap.
Im starting to get excited now lol

IT is al a question of money a lot of money for a big machine or a little money for a little machine and a little detail in a little game... so goes the capitalist world.
