When I see pictures like that in colour I begin to wonder how we'd cope in this day and age with that type of destruction. I think in the modern western world we would find it much harder as we are so accustomed to the convenience and luxuries of modern living. Look at how some of us 'suffer' if we don't have electricity, or even heaven forbid an Internet connection for a few days. How would people cope if they lost their entire house and immediate neighbourhood?

When my Mum was a kid their house got flattened during an air raid. Apparently, they just packed up what they could salvage into a hand cart and walked the 6 miles to a relatives house in the country and stayed there for the remainder of the war. Even so they had three close calls after that as they were on the Dooglebug flightpath to London through Kent. When I see pictures like that in colour I begin to wonder how we'd cope in this day and age with that type of destruction. My Mum lived through this in Watford just NW of London. She worked in a factory making bomb sights and my Grand Dad was a WW I vet doing Air Raid Warden duty. When they told me stories I had no comprehension of what it was like to live through this. Figured it out real quick during a tour in Viet Nam.

Nice find, glad of the release of those pictures- always interesting to see the colour photos from the times. One of my mothers uncle was a firefighter in Coventry, then London, so heard some but not all of the stories. My grandfather flew with the RAF before and during the Battle, and another of my mothers uncles was a rear gunner in a Lancaster (no idea which squadron). Thanks for sharing the find, Frey.

Brings you straight back indeed. Testimony to the steadfastness of the London people and drama that went on in those times. Makes you wonder how people coped day in and day out.
