LOL @ Ace of Aces. My brother-in-law and I spent hours flipping through the book.

I too played most of these. Red Baron from Dynamix was my favorite!

I loved Wings for the Amiga. Most Cinemaware games were pretty awesome back then. And to whoever asked, no having an Amiga 500 wouldn't have mattered on the quality of the graphics. The A1000, A500 and A2000 all had the same graphics chipset. The A3000 had a built in de-interlacer if you had the monitor for it and the A4000 and A600 used the AGA (Advanced Graphics Architecture) chipset, but hardly any games were programmed to take advantage of them because it was too small of a market to support. There were some differences and upgrades made to the original chipset - like going from the 512k "Agnus" chip to the 1MB "Fat Agnus" chip, but it didn't have much of an impact of the quality of the games released.
But the best thing about games back then was that you didn't have a game forum on the web to go to where people were saying:
"The flight model in Wings is total crap! Knights of the Sky's FM and damage model is sooo superior, and anyone who thinks different is obviously just a Wings fanboy incapable of seeing the truth. And nobody used those colors for their squadron planes back then, either. It was 1/256th lighter of a shade! Seriously, they need to patch that crap."
Yeah, back then it was all new and exciting. Now we have 500 times better and there is a segment of us gamers that are so jaded that I swear we enjoy the current crop of games less.

I agree with that 100%. It's so annoying to go on gaming forums - they are so full of negativity! There are people at EA forums ripping Fifa 12 a new one, based on pre sodding alpha builds - there are people moaning about F1 2011 just because F1 2010 had a few bugs. I remember when I bought Rome Total War - I played it extensively and exclusively for months - then I went on a TW forum, where the game was apparently 'awful' and 'unplayable'. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. As they say, the internet is a good and a bad thing.
