I remember one of my telling me, and I think showing me, a game he had tried copying for the Apple II where after you played it for a few minutes you'd suddenly end up in a jail cell with another guy in the cell telling you how you really should have bought the game.

They totally missed Cinemaware's Rocket Ranger with its diabolical fuel calculation wheel. I, being a kid and not having any money, of course copied the game off a friend and suffered the consequences (don't worry, I bought enough games after that to redeem myself and all my thieving friends).
