The Team Johannisthal proudly presents:

"The Johannisthal Mod"

For further info I'm reproducing the Read Me file for you:

Albatros D.III Johannisthal Mod

Albatros D.III, (Johannisthal), the classic German fighter that so many Pour le Merite aces, (Manfred von Richthofen, Lothar von Richthofen, Wolff, Allmenroeder, Schaefer, Voss, Udet, Berthold, Tutschek, Bernert, etc), flew and the one with which Germany dominated the skies through the first half of 1917. The real protagonist of the so called "Bloody April"!

If you want a more accurate, (at least visually), first half of 1917, (Bloody April), Career experience with the Albatros D.III in RoF,
this is the Mod for you.

What does it do:

Transforms ROF's default Albatros D.III,
(an OAW-built version that did not arrive in the field until July 1917) to appear as the Johannisthal-built D.III,
(which arrived in the field late December 1916/early January 1917), masking the rudder properly, eliminating the frontal, (engine), footstep, (that was characteristic of the OAW model), adding a rounded cockpit footstep, new wheel covers, correcting the engine hood and rearranging the nose plywood planks to match the Johhanisthal style of structure. (AFAIK we couldn't rearrange the radiator placement too, to have a fully historical representation of the earlier model)!
Other details as the weights table stencil on the port side and metallic identification placards on the nose and lower wings, have been added in Johannisthal style.

To achieve all those changes,
new alpha channel and new normal map have been introduced.

Caution!
Because of the new normal, (bump) map, introduction,
this mod is not fully compatible with the default, OAW series Albatrosse in game.
This wouldn't be a problem though, as the Johhanisthal type was already obsolete by the introduction of the game's default, D.III (OAW)
and in some cases, (Jasta 28w, comes in mind), the latter replaced the former.
So you'd better use this mod in Career, from the introduction of D.III in January '17 till mid summer '17.
So from July '17 and on, disable this mod and revert back to the default D.III, (OAW).
I remind you, this is only a visual change!

This mod contains:

New Albatros D.III normal map.

New default skin for the Albatros D.III (Historical Johannisthal style).

New default skins for Jasta Boelcke, Jasta 6 and Jasta 11, to be used in Career mode.

TEAM JOHANNISTHAL intention is to cover every relevant Jasta, with new defaults and aces skins, in regular updates.

Installation:

It is highly recommended to use JSGME, (JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler),
to install this Mod into your game so you can easily go back if something doesn't work for you.

JSGME is a Mod enabling-disabling utility you can download free, from:

http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products-jsgme.html

Once you've installed JSGME in your game's main directory,
a folder named MODS will be created.
Extract the JoMod_AlbD3 folder into the MODS folder.
Run JSGME and enable the mod.

Enjoy!

PS: If you don't want to use JSGME and still want to install this mod,
just copy the data folder included in the JoMod_AlbD3 folder to your game's main directory,
merge it with the existing folder and overwrite when asked, at your own risk!
(It will work, but it will be a bit difficult to revert back, retaining Mods On status at the same time).

Thanks to Zoring for his final touch on the rudder's alpha channel editing
and Dave, BLOWHARD, Douglas, for sharing his RGB values for the three tone camo!

Wishing I was in the La Cloche
A very fine effort, thank you.

If I may ask, is it just the pictures or my eye but the top of the rudder where there was "trimming" appears rather pixellated or otherwise jagged, or sawtooth-like. Is this a product of the mod alpha channel mask?

Would there have been any difference in the performance between the early and late DIII, therefore perhaps a new flight model is required?

Bandy, your eyes are not fooling you... dizzy
From some certain angles and depending on lighting and contrast, you may notice this anomaly.
As you can see there isn't there in every screenshot and it is hard to notice normally.
You may say it's an acceptable collateral damage.
About the FM we can't do anything as the FMs are hard coded.
I' don't think any FM change would have been allowed anyway.
As mentioned in the Read Me the change is only visual!
Until a proper early D.III is made by the developers... sigh
this is your best option. yep

Excellent! - If this mod could be incorporated officially in the sim one way or the other that would be cool! - If the team would think that it wouldn't be up to their standards of work then I'd say that it is better than the present situation with the OAW standing in for the Johannisthal.

As a matter of fact we plead to the developers,
about working out a solution and somehow could use this model alongside the Official OAW,
as a placeholder till their proper one arrives, but we were politely denied. nope
It's a delicate matter, anyway... sigh

I can only imagine! It is their "rice-bowl" after all, and image is everything...

Good luck chaps, I truly value 3rd party people making a difference in our sim of choice.

Regardless of the politics you have done a fine job!
Not only that, between you all, you have done it for free, and in your own time. I think everyone who has followed your endeavours know how passionate you all are!

I throw a large over zealous salute in your direction! wave2

Thanks for the comments guys. Just trying to provide some historical accuracy to the sim we love. wink

As of now skinning the rest of Jasta 11 and the remaining default Jasta is our main priority. Any info concerning markings for the Jasta is much appreciated. smile

Hi all,
Now that Graf is back it's time to reveal some of the work done so far and still to be released.
The original version of the Mod is available again for download (the original post link has been updated).
In notice that the preview thumbnail pics are not going to work,
after the latest game updates (not in DDS format).
I hope within this weekend I'll be able to upload the revised v.1.1
With some extra Goodies and some more Jastas (generics) covered... wink

Some pics to show you where things are at the moment...

(a little less weathering, new metal primer colour, softer edge between the camo colours,
reworked the placards, added rigging instruction sheet...it's been a long time now to remember everything!)

Here's how the new default skin looks:

Jasta 37 Ernst Hamscher (foreground) Ernst Udet (background):

Jasta 12 Generic:

I've been reworking the Mod due to further research and additional reference.
Can you spot the differences?
It's an ongoing and never ending work in progress... dizzy
I'm trying to make a universal normal map as I've already done with the D.V
(the next expansion of the Johannisthal Mod)
in order to achieve compatibility with the OAW version, with the minimum loss of detail.
The update is coming soon...

Jasta 12 defaults and v.Tutschek skins:

I like the wood root fairings. Did you lag the intake manifolds? The shots are just a bit distant to tell, but it appears so.

Well, I haven't done anything to the intake manifolds.
They must have been treated by Graf in the first version of the Mod.
I'm just enhancing his original work...
The D.V part is been done entirely by me.

Generic Jasta 6

New corrected footstep

Early D.V lower nose planking

I'll come to you Jim, about some tiny details I want some clarification for...

Glad you didn't notice the missing, (Jasta Boelcke characteristic), field modded louvres on v.Tutschek's skin!
I haven't "modelled" them yet... rolleyes

You can put the J2 louvres on? Fantastic! Probably just create the illusion?

Shoot me an email when you are ready.
