So what is the large (metal?) thing in just below the gun in the brisfits pilots cockpit. Thanks in advance.

It's a crash pad on the end of the gun to protect the pilots head when you crash.

No offence but I don't think that's it. It looks metal and has a copper tube running from the base of it.

I'm starting to think it is part of the Constantinesco (C.C.) synchronizer gear because of the tube and position on the gun.

And then combine the crash pad theory to get it's a synchronizer gear with a leather padded crash pad? Apologies Oesau!
