It's a crash pad on the end of the gun to protect the pilots head when you crash.

No offence but I don't think that's it. It looks metal and has a copper tube running from the base of it.

I'm starting to think it is part of the Constantinesco (C.C.) synchronizer gear because of the tube and position on the gun.
