For people like me who have been wondering what the heck you are supposed to do during recon patrols, there is a quick tutorial on the ROF forum:

Then the eye icon disappears and appears again, but this time you have to click in the right pane, where you have to specify 'what type of objective' you found. Once you click on a line, the text will be underlined.
So first click: letter marking the location. Second click: identify target.

Next: photo reconaissance... I know how to bring up the camera and make the shot. The mission briefing states I have to "keep the correct altitude and heading". I assume this means I have to follow the flightpath on the map precisely, but somehow I've never been able to complete a photo recon mission successfully. Am I missing something?

Never flown a career-made one, but maybe this helps: Han said you have to fly at 2000+ meters (?) for the camera to operate. I don't gather from your text if you did make the pictures, but mission status was 'failed', or you know how to make the pics, but the mission didn't let you do it, by showing the red cross over the lens camera. In first case, i have no idea (maybe after i fly such a career mission), in the second, you just have to fly over 2000m and keep the plane level (which you already know) smile

If all fails, blame the 'beta' status duck

The camera did come up and I was able to make photos. I used the bombsight to make sure I was right over the target. Now that I think about it, the map did not show an exact flightpath over the target, but rather an oval circuit. So maybe I got the heading wrong after all?

Of course now in my career I'm getting all sorts of missions except photo recons, so I'll have to wait to try again.

I finally got another photo recon mission scheduled, and this time it was succesful. I kept clicking the camera until the message "recon photo taken" came up. I'm not sure, but I suspect you need to take more than one photo of the target.

Maybe you have to take a series of overlapping photos, that would be realistic.

LShift+A turns on level autopilot, that may help, you do have to give the plane enough gas to hold altitude though or the autopliot will disengage. LShift+X/Y lets you flat turn with level autopilot on, like you do in bomsight mode.

Yep, for recon and artillery missions, it is best to engage Level Autopilot and fly a racetrack pattern around the target.

You have to take 5 photos before the camera icon disappears. Sometimes it may take a couple of passes to get them if you are not quick enough the first time around.

That's it then. Thanks!

Would have been nice if this had been explained in a readme though.
