He must have been very close to being awarded the VC but more often or not the VC is usually awarded posthumously.

That's a shame, of course, as there are many whose achievements seem to be tarnished just because they had the good fortune to survive the engagement.
It's not like "survival = it wasn't THAT bad". I mean, how many VC winners might've lived themselves had they had better luck? The fact of whether you lived or not is secondary to the behavior exhibited when you BELIEVE you are going to die. If you then manage to salvage your hide that is MORE impressive.
