Just an engine performance tip I'm passing on from the banana forum thanks to Frankyboy. In order to push the throttle "through the gate" and activate WEP/over boost (ie. throttle setting 100% ----> 110%) you must first press "Boost Cut Out". If you don't the max throttle setting remains at 100%.
I'm away from my PC and have no opportunity to try this. It seems (to me) to be so counterintuitive that I never tried it.....I just figured over boost = 100% or was non-functioning. Has anyone tried this?

Ooops! Got carried away. Well, at least I said "not functional" or some such in my original post.

Seriously, I find it somewhat discouraging that if you had titled your thread "How I feel now about playing COD" or something similar, you'd have by now 1000 views and 300 views expressed. Thx for sharing that. I wondered about the boost-cut thing but never bothered to investigate. I will try a little when time allows.
Michael.

So true, sad to say.
Re the over boost: I'm hoping that Frankyboy's tip indeed works. At the risk of blowing an engine, I've frequently wished for a little more oomph to pull enough lead on a target. The trick is to let off on the throttle in time!

Hmm, now I'm really intrigued. IIRC accounts of using overboost did provide extra power, but also created a lot of engine vibration, black exhaust smoke, and, ultimately, engine failure if used too long. Plus the erks back at home base would be royally pissed to see the gate-wire cut because that meant an all-nighter tearing down and rebuilding the top end. Looking forward to trying this!

I've tried the boost cut out a few times, only really in the Hurri tho as in the Spit once you push that lever there is no bringing it back!! It does seem to add a couple extra pounds of boost but I haven't left it on long enough to see if it will eventually kill the old Merlin...

Did a quick non-combat trial with the Spit IIa. Hitting the "T" (Boost Cut Off) key physically "opens the gate" and allows the throttle to be advanced a little (10%) further -as the in-cockpit animation clearly shows. As Wayne noted above, once the gate is opened it cannot be toggled closed. It's important to note this if you need to go full throttle later - you WILL blow your engine sooner than later. At full mixture/fine pitch you do get a few pounds of extra boost and engine speed picks up about 200 rpm's. (3100 -----> 3300). There seems to be a slight but noticeable increase in both climb rate and level ASI, but your engine WILL blow a seal, throwing oil on your front canopy, losing power, belching yellow flames & black smoke, and shaking horrendously. Start looking for an open field below in that case. If over boost is used sparingly and you bring your throttle back to normal cruise ***BEFORE the drama occurs*** all should be OK. (If you find otherwise I will exchange a new parachute for your used one). At less than full-fine prop pitch I found over boost to have little/no effect on engine performance or longevity after going to full (110%) throttle. When decreasing mixture from full rich to full lean terrible things happened when I went to over boost. As Tree described, the plane/engine began vibrating wildly, quickly followed by the Merlin's dreaded black-oil screen of death. When would I go to over boost? 1). When a 109/110 has me bracketed with tracer and I need to DO SOMETHING. (Tom Cruise's Topgun "pilot shyte" brake application doesn't usually work for me) 2) pulling lead for a high-deflection shot requiring a second or two of extra oomph 3) Short field take-off and you're about to hit the trees/buildings. This MAY save your life but you'll likely be returning shortly to execute a short field deadstick landing. When NOT to use it? 1) Pretty much any time else.

yes, I checked it, too. Should read "boost-cut: out(or off)" instead of "boost cut out".
Michael. Funny how a little punctuation can make a difference!

I guess the conclusion is: if you need to use it you're doing something wrong! That's a pretty good rule of thumb. Me? I'm an expert at doing something wrong! LOL

Yeah, these comments are right on the money....particularly Snappers; very much an option of last resort and best to be avoided in most scenarios. I tried this out from day 1 out of interest, but its interesting to note that in the Spit Mk I official Pilot Notes there is no official prohibition, just a note to exercise caution. The phrase 'Combat Concessions' and insistence upon reporting its use probably indicates it is only to be used in these conditions, or you'll get a bollocking. (vii) Combat Concessions : (a) When using 100 octane fuel, +12 lb./sq.in. boost, obtained by operating the boost control cut-out, may be used for short periods. Use of these concessions must be reported upon landing and an entry made into the engine log book.I'm hoping today's beta will include the addition of 100 octane fuel, but we shall see. Ilya did mention that there would be a long list of FM adjustments so I'm cautiously optimistic. It's a big factor in the poor high alt (and general) performance we are seeing at present. *Cue raging argument about the availibility of 100 octane, lol. I'll give that one a miss I reckon. Been over it before.*
