...when flying the Fokker Dr 1? I've now reached the stage where I can just about persuade the beast to turn left without going sideways (a bootful of left rudder), but once it starts turning, I seem to be engaged in a frantic stick-stirring exercise to keep it there. Though it is sometimes easier to do a 270-degree right turn than a 90-degree left one, I'd like eventually to be able to make tight left turns without having to shove the stick into every corner of the cockpit. Is there a proper technique for making what looks even approximately like a controlled turn, rather than a fist-fight between man and machine? Any advice welcome (except for 'find an easier hobby...')

Now I don't know if this is right but I find that if you dip your nose and and roll left aswell as applying rudder the dr1 doesn't fight you as much. It's counter intuitive I know but it works for me !!

Me too Danosh...nose below the horizon, roll left, lots of left boot...full back stick - ailerons to finesse it through - blip to help control the torque if you feel like getting pretty advanced.

As was said, use the blip switch and rudder!

I seem to remember that historically they'd often do a 270 degree right turn rather than a 90 degree left.

That was with the Camel according to my readings.

I agree with keeping the nose at or below the horizon. That and initiating the turn with left rudder before adding aileron.

I can't fly that dr1 for squat. Almost wish i hadn't bought it but it's iconic so i guess it's fun for a spin here and there. Come on left turn clyde! Gah no left i said left!

The camel i have absolutely no problems with at all. My current career is as a camel driver and i've stayed alive longer in that plane than any other so far taking the Dead is dead approach. I think i'm a couple days short of a month with around 19 kills and 12 or so balloons. The camel i like. The pup i end up in flat spins all the time and the se5 i have a tendency to pull apart alot. I also have alot of success in the pfalz dIIIa. I dunno why it doesn't seem like that great of a plane but my career on that one as well i'm doing quite well.

Thanks guys. Yes, anything but obvious, but pushing the nose down before starting the turn seems to help - I've not tried blipping the throttle, but that makes sense too.

I should probably get more practice in on easier a/c first anyway. I started a campaign in the Fokker D VII, and it seems much more docile - got into a dogfight with Camels over no-mans-land on my first mission, and downed two!
