Works like a charm! 1000% better than "stock". Spitfire flyby (F3) not perfect, but close. External Spitfire is wonderful. Internal cockpit more "mechanical" to my ears -- will have to get used to it. Guns sound "different" -- not as I imagine 8 x .303's going off "just outside my door", but better than "stock" as well. Took me awhile for me to figure where to put what file (being as computer illiterate as I am), but eventually muddled my way through. The change in GUI graphics during the startup & menu was my first clue that I finally got it right. Kudos to Jafa, Pickle, and the OP - jt_medina - for this!

I had a look at the readme.txt but could see if it needed it or not, i.e. could be used MP.

Yes it does FearlessFrog. Cool - thank you. Kegetys's wonderful mod enabler here, for those looking: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3311500/1.htmlPS Don't use online, as they might turn on 'don't change files' Multiplayer cheat thing on and you'll get put on the naughty stair for a bit.

Sorry FF, was AFK for a bit. Thanks to Chucky for the answer I couldn't really give you .......being the computard that I am. I was planning later tonight to fly MP and report accordingly. The, uh, "empirical" method to see if MP is borked or not with these mods. Edit: per your post above, good thinking. No MP flying for this boy 'till further word.

Careful with mp in the future we may be banned if we used these mods. Roger that! I need to experiment more, but I believe when I launch CoD from my regular desktop shortcut the "stock" (ie. unmodded and hence MP-safe) game opens, and when I launch from Steam the modded version opens instead. Fortunately the modded GUI graphics are very different from the original "stock" graphics, so it's easy to very quickly tell which version is opening up. This is probably self-evident to the 'puter-knowledgeable amongst us, but I'm the guy that took 2 hours scratching my head trying to figure out where to put the different required mod files! (now it would take me 30 seconds, but it was 20 minutes last night simply deducing that "dir" = directory = folder. I believe I yelled "Eureka" at that precise "aha" moment......). But lemme tell ya: the new Merlin sounds are worth it!

Original vs Jafa comparo: a very quick screen grab of a Hurricane cockpit, external, and fly by with guns firing in each case. Unedited other than necessary compression to Vimeo plus subtitling: http://vimeo.com/24922949My thoughts: Cockpit: I've never flown in a Spitfire and have only seen/heard movie depictions, plus read many firsthand accounts by actual BOB pilots, of course. I once flew as passenger in a 20-minute hop in a Harvard which obviously has a far different engine (air-cooled radial vs inline liquid-cooled Merlin) and I would think much different acoustics inside the cockpit. That said, the engine noise in the Harvard cockpit was LOUD, even with modern aviation headphones - plus the low engine tones coupled with the physical vibrations of the hammering radial engine had a real visceral effect. (No, I didn't upchuck....but the thought did cross my mind at one point!). I've often read how smooth the Merlin felt to neophyte pilots fresh from OTU's (likely Harvards). I suspect the glycol-jacketing deadens noise somewhat, and the V-12 Merlin configuration would no doubt be smoother than a Wasp radial. I kinda prefer the "original" cockpit sound to Jafa's, but both are fine IMHO. Guns in cockpit: prefer the Jafa version. More of a "muzzle-blast" effect IMHO than the original. External (F2 keystroke): Jafa nailed it, 'nuff said. External gun sound: I prefer Jafa's. Cleaner sound. Also, the Jafa external guns sound a little "lost" as you would expect with no surrounding buildings, rocks, etc to amplify, Just my opinion as a target shooter & hunter for many years (long- and short- arms) indoors and out. YMMV of course - this ain't the hill I care to die on. Fly by (F3 keystroke): Jafa better than original's "lawnmower". Doppler effect good on approach but attenuates far too quickly on departure. If the descending tone of the departing Hurricane could be drawn out a second or three longer I think we'd be closer to the mark. Fly by guns: on both versions -- yeeeeechhhh!!! I think the Doppler effect has been wrongly applied to both here and it just sounds weird. IMHO, of course! Thoughts?

Merlin should be very loud with two rows of open ended exhaust pointing straight at the cockpit. Also should be louder when you open the canopy but same engine and wind sound as with closed. I have been in many small planes and they are loud, very loud even with earphones on.
The only real way to simulate this sound would be to have a cockpit setup in a noise proof room. This set up would include 7 speakers around in a 7,1 setup and a butt kicker under your seat. Put on real leather pilot helmet with earphones for radio, turn up the volume on the outside speaker setup to vibration levels and fly.
The last flight with my buddy in his plane we were testing noise cancelling headsets. I still had to turn mine almost all the way up to hear him.

What you're saying makes a lot of sense -- plus you've got some fair experience under your belt. I've wondered what the wind and engine noise would be like in a Hurricane or Spitfire when the canopy is opened in flight. I didn't know if the forward windscreen plus low seating in the cockpit would shield a lot of that noise or if it would be overpowering. Judging by how some pilots preferred to fly/fight in their Hurricanes with an open canopy (at lower altitudes, at least) for the added visibility, it must've at least been bearable. Same goes for photos I've seen of Wildcat and Hellcat pilots doing the same in the South Seas.
But you raise a good point re loudness/sound surround/butt kicker to better reproduce an actual cockpit. Reminds me of the old saying for those who want 100% accuracy: be careful what you wish for - you might just get it! LOL
I'm pleased with the direction that Jafa has given us with the sound mods.

I've heard Merlins at different air shows including Duxford, with the well known naked standalone Merlin. They are loud.
Cheers, Insuber

Haha - maybe! As the plane approaches it's sounding great, but then the sound falls apart as it passes by and departs. Hopefully that can be adjusted; the sound of a passing Merlin trumps everything.....and that includes my Harley!!!! (it kills me to admit it, though)

It's good but it's not right.. The early merlin has a more distinctive roar, and I think this one sounds to 'deep' if I can put it like that.. I've had a MkII spit taxi up right in front of me (2 metres) and it has a different resonance, trust me.. No argument from me! As the Spits, Hurries, Mossies, Lancs, and even P51's evolved the exhaust manifolds changed, not to mention likely changes to bore, stroke, cams, carbs, etc. -- all of which would play a part in the exhaust note. Even changes to the intake would add to the overall engine sound as development progressed through the war years. You've no doubt seen this before - he got almost as close to a Merlin as you did! LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX629ZjWD68&feature=youtube_gdata_player

how do you install the sound mod please? 1. Download the great kegetys SFS mod from here: http://www.kegetys.net/(It get's updated so I won't hotlink it, and the download has a very good readme file too - essentially you just copy the kegetys.dll to your COD program directory and then edit a file called ' Launcher.exe.config' to add a couple of lines) 2. Download and extract the sound mod from here: http://www.gamefront.com/files/20416311/Beta_Cod_Sounds_7zIt needs to be extracted to where you run CoD, i.e. under a new MODS/ sub-directory. 3. Change your Steam launch parameters to include the sound mod, i.e. add this: -mod=MODS\CMSound Hope that helps.
