SimHQ is having good success with current hosted events: ArmA 2 Military Monday, the racing SCES LeMans series, and the new Touring Car Series, but with Mangum's latest article on Ghost Recon we're thinking about expanding multiplayer to one more hosted title.

We would like your opinion...

Should we add Ghost Recon to SimHQ hosted multiplayer?

Would you guys who are still active in it join it?

The thought would be to host a regular day/time during the week.

Teamwork (always!) and gameplay would be military-lite "beer and Cheetos" style.

Base it on GR + the two add-on titles and 2-3 3rd party mods/maps. Keep it simple so joining doesn't become a download fest.

What do you think?

I've still got Ghost Recon installed and I would be more than happy to participate, as much as my schedule will allow me to.

Sounds like a great idea to me too, I might even join in smile

If you get the details pulled together, game IP, comms IP, date and time, post it up in the Ghost Recon forums at http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php?showforum=69 and if you let me know I'll give it some pimpage on the news page too.

Thanks!

IMO... if we do this server... it needs to be another 24/7 so different groups can organize, needs to be password protected so outsiders can't just join, and TS3 needs to be used for comms... it should also stay a classic server, with no add-ons, mods, or total conversions... at least for the first couple of months for players to easily get into it and play.

and with me working the night evening/night shift 5 days a week... i can't be there as much as i would want... which would bring up the problem of admin'ing the server... dealing with problem players etc etc...

just my 2 cents... to get it all out before we start or do this.

Indeed will have to find and reinstall (or grab from steam) but I am definitely up for some GR!

Yes! Sounds like a lighter, casual summer entertainment - like a good beach novel.

Last night Bill Grant and I tested our brash promise that the old Ghost Recon multiplayer connectivity and interface is practically bulletproof. Just to make sure. And it was just as solid and reliable as ever. Very quickly we were into a co-op mission, depsite not having fired it up for quite a while.

The 24/7 idea sounds luxurious, and Magnum you suggested some possible problems with that. Has it ever worked to assign two or three people admin responsibility to spread the load?

I would suggest asking how many here that are interested already have the two ancient add-ons - Desert Siege and Island Thunder - before deciding to not have them on the server at first. I may be wrong, but I think a lot of people got them originaly, or got them in the Gold (or is it GOTY?) rerelease. Otherwise, there with just the stock stand alone GR there won't be a lot of missions and it could get stale pretty fast.

I'd be all over this if I hadn't given my Gold copy to a buddy of mine a few years ago. GR was one excellent game.

I was recently over at GhostRecon.net (Hi Rocky!) and was surprised and excited to see that content (Custom missions/campaigns) are still being churned out for OGR!! Lots of stuff out there to try, but it would be difficult to keep up!

I would agree that the server should have at minimum GR+DS+IT. Maybe a 'mod of the week' advertised in advance to allow downloads? I'd favor more Mission/Campaign mods rather than total conversions, and, selfishly, maybe standardize on the great SPV4 Weapons mod for variety smile

I don't recall if GR had any SERVER SIDE mission/Campaign mods which wouldn't require downloads. My recollection is NOT, but then I never messed with any DEDICATED SERVER setup.

Agreed, Recluse.
SPV4 is a small download and an excellent addition to the soldier class and weapons selections.

Would simplify the mod of the week/mission pack process if a link to any to be used could be posted at the beginning of each week, or right before.

Yes, there are a few Server Side mission packs, iirc. Will check my storage and Readme's

Count me in if it's the original GR we're talking about.

Lost interest when the AW stuff came out, but never stopped playing the original.

I also have a spare game disc if anyone wants it (I'm in UK).

Count me in too! I only have the GOTY version so will have to pick up the 2 expansions somewhere or buy the gold package on steam but that shouldn't be a problem.

I think the GOTY version has Desert Siege included.

Yes, I'm in, but prefer Friday night or weekends. Sometimes I travel for business during the week. As far as WHICH 2-3 mods, HX5 Red Sun has to be one of them. Don't you agree? WinkNGrin

Recluse, what's wrong with total conversion mods? In GR, they are just as easy to install and play as a single mission mod, and potentially more versatile and fun.
