I just can't believe how fast I am eating up storage...

This computer has 5TB of total storage in 3 arrays and a single stand alone drive, which is much less than I used to have in my computers. Two of the arrays (pure storage) are nearly 2TB each. One of those is down to just over 80GB (4% to 5%) left. I also have several servers on which is stored another 11TB (40TB total storage) of miscellaneous data.

So I decided to buy a 4-bay NAS box and 8TB of additional storage. The drives arrived today, and the NAS box should be here tomorrow, so by Friday I will have an additional 7+TB (RAID 5) of storage available.

I think though, at the rate I am using storage, and the amount of data growth, that will last only 2 years at best. My real problem is that I am loathe to delete anything. This is a psychological thing that I have acquired since I have been in charge of Defense Department networks back in the day and in more recent years, large financial company networks. In both cases, the culture is to not only never throw anything out, but to have multiple versions and multiple copies of all versions backed up of all data. It's a sickness. And because of it, soon, I will have my own bloody data center here if I do not do something about it. The funny thing is, I have so much data, but I can't even find anything! I have no cataloging/indexing/search system installed.

One day, I will probably be assimilated by my own technological monstrosity, and bring forth the birth of the Borg! LOL

What exactly do you have stored on your PC? The entire Netflix film library? biggrin

I feel you man, I have a Buffalo Terastation NAS with 1TB across 4 drives and I'm in the process of upgrading the drives to 2TB across 4. Its easy to fill up space, I have a pretty sizable music collection as well as movies and TV show ripped to my drives. But you sir have a some data! Thats the price you pay to not have shelves full of DVDs and CDs taking up space.

I've got a bad feeling about this.....

Not a problem. I know a sure-fire way to clean up those drives...

Ask your Wifey to let you use the vacuum, and then use the flex hose with the brush attachment inside the computer.
While its running.
Like you did before.

Time for a digital version of that hoarders show? You can stand to the side with a sad look as you explain you need the dancing kitty GIF, and the half finished download that stopped during an ISP hiccup and wouldn't resume, but that they can delete 2 of the 5 mp3s of the same song. biggrin

OMG! With the exception of the GIF (Ok, not really), this is my EXACT problem.

I still keep unfinished downloads. I have 5 to 8 copies of the same music, in multiple directories. I keep entire uncompressed backups of the c:\Program File (x86) directory. Etc. Etc.

What the hell is wrong with me!?!?!?!

For example... The entire MS catalog. I mean everything. If they have ever published it, I have an .ISO of it. Multiple copies of multiple versions, and the major updates as .ISO's as well.

The long setup is complete... I forgot about the parity drive in RAID-X, which is how I set it up... Lops 2TB off of the net total.

So now I have a drive with 5.4TB available instead of 7.4TB.

Meh... Works for me.

I think Windows 3.1 predates CD drives, doesn't it? biggrin

But yeah, my brother does something similar here. Stores everything on there; shows, isos for work, all sorts of crap, in an unsorted array of directories. I keep telling him he needs to do a bit of a cleanup, but that requires effort...

You guys are sick... I keep stuff around for a very long time, but I clean house now and then! I still have my Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe data files and mods, and that dates to 1991. But stuff back then didn't really eat the HDD space like it does now. wink

I'm trying my best to remember but I think SWOTL took less than 10 MB of hard drive space.

Yeah, if that! Even more funny, I still have a running stock version of SWOTL in DOSBox on my Win7 64-bit machine right now. clapping

I avoid this problem by backing up to optical media periodically and storing 1 copy of my family photos every year to an HD and spreading them around. One in my fire safe. One in the garage. I had one in our storage unit when I lived in an apartment now but, since I bought my house, I do not need that anymore.

All I really back up are pictures my wife takes so, if I ever want to buy anything storage related I just tell her "It helps protect the pictures"

Funny how graphics cards do that AMIRIGHT? LOL smile
