And quite probably true. Something similar happened to my dad. He was able to unlock the car door of a vehicle but he was unable to get the ignition to start. After trying to get the car to start for a little while the owner of the vehicle came back to his car. He asked my dad what was the problem and my dad told him that the darn ignition key didn't work in his car anymore. The guy said to my dad that he might try this key instead and my dad put the key he was given into the ignition and it worked. He said it still took a few seconds for it to dawn on him that he was in the wrong car. He was putting the car into reverse to back out of the parking stall when it finally dawned on him. What had happened was that both cars had their door locks keyed the same but the ignitions were keyed differently. Wheels

My car is so completely covered in dents and scratches (all, ALL caused by the previous owner, I'll have you know!) that it looks distinctive enough that I couldn't mistake it for another. That and the chamoise leather rag and 'This Is A Stupid Yellow Sign' sign on top of the dashboard. Which is fortunate as there are many VW Polos around here!

There is no mistaking my 82 Chevy Silverado for anything else. The Honda OTOH, looks like quite a few other Hondas.

In The Peoples Republic of Boulder, CO, every other car is a blue Subaru hatchback. Leave one unlocked at Whole Foods for an hour and a few folks will get in it...

I'll file this with the "Thief gets roughed up by curb not Marines" story, most likely made up but still a good story.
I've got a bad feeling about this.....
