That being said I am seriously looking at a SIG-522.

I think as much as I like 7.62/308, I would still go the M16 route. Lighter to carry the rifle and you can carry almost twice as much ammo. Not knowing the full parameters of the situation, I would go for flexibility and mobility. M16 over AR because the ability to select auto is a no cost advantage. Unless you have humped a lot of weight in a rucksack and then a heavy rifle and heavy ammo you would not understand the difference it makes. You are going to have a lot of other essentials to carry. If mobile or hunting, weight is your big concern. Lots of the neat geewhiz stuff becomes meaningless. I know the weapon choice will vary by country, and that is why I said that living in the US it would be M16 because parts, accessories, and ammo would all be more common. For that same reason if I were to choose a shotgun it would be a Remington 870 12 guage. In many ways the shotgun is a better choice, but I have more experience with the M16 and I favor the better range capability. That is why I also favor the 20 inch barrel; range and better velocity of the round. That makes up a little of the 5.56 bullet inadequacy.

As I said, not knowing the situation of this apocolypse, I would favor flexibility and mobility.

And remember the question was 1 rifle/shotgun.

The M14 will do better at CQC than an AR or AK74 will do at knocking people down and KEEPING them down at 300+m. Plus, what's cover against 5.56 or 5.45 is only concealment to 7.62x51. If CQC is your main focus, a suppressed full-auto SMG in 9mm will do better than something in 5.56.

That being said I'd take my AR, for reasons mentioned multiple times already.

7.62x51 has range, penetration and is effective against larger than varmint sized animals, therefore it wins in a full spectrum survival scenario.

If I had to protect my family from someone that wished to do them harm, I would prefer to have a weapon.

There are a lot of guns I like more such as a SCAR, but when parts availability is important and I'm on this side of the ocean, then it's going to be something like an M-16/AR. I do like that under-shotgun attachment.

If I was in more of an Asian setting, then an AK - again for parts/ammo availability.

If talking shotguns, i'd be hard pressed to choose between an 870 and an Ithaca 37, I think the latter is better functionally but requires more care and attention and spare parts are harder to come by.
