TIR is a must!!!
You need to use CDU somehow.
Actually, it's not impossible to cope with no-TIR situation if you plan your flight very carefully.

Let me put it this way --- you can fly and do everything without TrackIR. TrackIR is not a "must."
However, getting one will greatly improve the way you do things. For one, it will free up a hat switch for trim. And you will want to constantly trim your aircraft. For another, it will make searching for targets/enemies/missiles a lot more intuitive. And so on and so forth.

You do NOT need TIR for this sim. I have it, and like it, but because I am in a room with very bright ambient light -- which I cannot mask -- I use it only at night. Map your view controls (slow) to a view hat (mine is shifted so that I can use the hat commands unshifted for trim, which is all-important in this airplane) so that when you are not using TIR you can pan your view as you need. Map a "View Center" function to this button, too. I also use shifted functions on my DMS key for TIR/On, TIR/Off and TIR/Center. Do NOT let anyone tell you that you can't play this sim without TIR because there is little A2A, a lot of heads-down "office work" and in certain situations, such as aiming and firing Mavs, not having your head moving is an advantage. If you have a CH HOTAS I can share my profile with you, it's well tuned for both TIR and non-TIR usage as described above.

I agree with Ice on this. A TIR is not essential (in any sim), but it is highly desirable. I would recommend trying to find a used TIR4, which should be a cheaper option. You could also look into TrackNoIR.

Track IR is a total game changer for any flight sim, well worth the money. I would go so far to say that it is better to have a crappy joystick and a track IR than a nice HOTAS and use the mouse look.
Decent pooter lots or ram newish GFX card yet to be modified cougar Track IR (the wife make fun of this...)
So this is how the world ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper....

Free-track is a very cheap and simple solution, it provides the same function as the TrackIR, you should try make one for urself in case u don't want (or can't afford) to buy a TrackIR. This is my demo of Freetrack on IL-2 1946. Freetrack/TrackIR will change ur flying experience, believe me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkxQmZGchUshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXudldDkqL4

You can fly it without a TIR easily enough, no sweat. I do so often when testing things. Things that a TIR /does/ do for you: Most importantly, improved SA: You fly visually, by looking around, make your turns by aligning with roads, you don't lose track of where your target is, etc etc. It even changes simple navigation, and is must have for most formation flight (There are people who say otherwise. This is because they only fly one type of formation ) In terms of combat, you can quickly sight incoming fire and this increases the chances of evading it. In dogfights, lose sight - lose the fight. TIR is a must, and if you run into someone online who has TIR and you don't, you're probably toast. But again, aside from these things, A-10C is perfectly playable and enjoyable without TIR.

I used to fly DCS Black Shark for months before getting a TrackClip Pro for use with FreeTrack. I must say that it IS possible to "live" without TrackIR or FreeTrack, but it's not as comfortable. Don't give up on a sim just because it's better flying it with something you can't afford. You have the basics - a HOTAS system (hell, I personally even use my stick's throttle slider, which is worse) - now go and fly.
A newbie in the flight sim thingy.

This question always amazes me when asked in forums about highly detailed sims. Mostly because if you are looking for a sim with the most detail and realism....do you want to fly said sim with a hat switch ala 1995?
I get that some folks can't afford TIR... but honestly, if you are into or want to get into sims, TIR is IMHO just as required as a good joystick. No, it is not essential, but if you want max realism...it really is the only way to go. Once you use it or Free Track, you will never fly a sim any other way.

Nothing is worth playing without tracking IR Ever tried playing Solitaire with TrackIR instead of a mouse? Minesweeper's even harder!

I guess the best way to put it is that "yes, it is worth playing and it is playable without TrackIR, however, you will want TrackIR pretty soon."

Definately playable! Using hat to switch view is ok too. I have crappy Logitech Freedom and keyboard and I kill things but only when I'm not trimming :P (NO don't buy Logitech Freedom 2.4 lol)

You don't need it to enjoy the sim, but after having one for almost 5 years I wouldn't go back to not having one. Along with rudder pedals and a decent HOTAS. But flight sims are a serious hobby for me so its a no brainer.
I've got a bad feeling about this.....
