Here is another Jasta 21, Lt. Oskar Zeiss, combat report:
It's January 1918 and a flight of four, with our CO as Flight Leader took off from, St.Loup,Champagne, aerodrome, for a morning patrol.
We climbed at 2,700 m and flew along the front, heading to the East.
Our CO Hptn. Jakob Muller:
Hptn. Muller spotted a couple of Breguet 14s, flying slightly above us over our side of the front and rocked his wings to warn the rest of us.
Probably conducting a reconnaissance flight the Breguets were unescorted.
I took permission to attack, as the leading ace of our Jasta and being followed by my wingman: Fwbl. Ludwig Lange, I turned on them.
While turning we shallow dived to gain some speed and approached them from their below 7 o'clock.
Hptn. Muller and his wingman Lt. Niklaus Hoppstetter turned as well, but in a slow accenting turn, getting ready for a Boom n Zooming second pass.
I kept my shallow diving and positioned myself well under the belly of the second one. We were still undetected...
When I was at approx. 50 meters from him I zoom climbed opening fire with both my spandaus might and
KABUM!!! he exploded in mid air...
at the time, Hptn. Muller and Lt. Hoppstetter had gained enough altitude to attack from above but were still away from the action...
Being intoxicated by the hunting frenzy and having a momentum advantage I continued my attack to the other one.
The poor guys, probably in a state of shock from the horrible end of their comrades, didn't try to evade or shoot back and in a mater of seconds I set them ablaze too!
It was my 17th victory, getting me closer to the "Pour Le Merite"!
We then formed up again, continuing our patrol with no other encounter.
