Hey guys,
Well, today I bought RoF:ICE from Amazon.com's instant digital download in the games section. Well, first a little background.

Last week I purchased IL-2:CloD. Being a long time simmer and fan of the game, I was incredibly disappointed in what was released. After several days tinkering with the game, I decided to put it up and wait for whatever miracle patch would make this thing semi-playable. Last year I tried the RoF demo. Most of my two weeks was spent trying to figure out how to map the controls, trying to figure out the gunnery, and generally get it working on my system. Well, the two weeks expired and I left the demo on my HD for months. In wanting to get back into flight sims again, I purchased the ICE pack today.

Um....holy friggin' smolies! Man, I haven't had this much fun in ages!

After tinkering with it for a couple of hours, I decided to give Multiplayer a shot and joined a newbie server. I can say that the folks in there were incredibly helpful. I had an absolute blast with the low-down, knife-fight furballs close to spawn. With almost everything maxed out, the sim is beautiful. I joined a server with the actual front, artillery landing in no-man's-land, and the rain from the clouds streaking across my screen brought a huge smile to my face.

Anyways, 777...great job! I understand that the sim had some issues at first, but tonight, as a customer, I had an absolute blast. Hell, I even purchased the D.VIIF as my first add-on.

It's incredibly cool to try a new sim and be so taken back and have an enjoyable experience right out of the box.

Well done guys wink

P.S. And many thanks to Vocatx for the kick in the pants to buy this game. wink

I really need to get on the multiplayer side of things more. I've done it a few times, but not enough to comment with my opinion. I've read that the ping times on the servers are not so important as they are on a FPS. Is there truth to this? Usually I try to fly on the US servers where I have a good ping time, but I can only fly during the week in the evening and the servers are relatively unpopulated at that time.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting more ROF multiplayer time under my belt. smile

I'm in the US and I often fly on non-US servers. The pings shown in the game for those are sometimes yellow, but I rarely have problems with lag. If there is lag, it is usually on the server side due to a mission with too many objects. Anyhow, the best way to find out is to just try some of the other servers. Les Hellequins (sp?) server has been pretty popular lately. You might try that.

It's good isn't it NWarty. I remember thinking, why did I wait so long to get it ?

You like the low-level fur balls , thats good , and some people prefer the 'high altitiude' historical/realism servers with full realism.

Then others like me enjoy a good SP experience.

The good thing about the sim is that all of it is available.

I've been having my own "why the heck did I wait so long to buy this" moments since I finally bought ROF a few weeks ago.

Since then, it's been why did I buy Shogun 2 and Crysis 2 if I'm never going to play them..

Welcome.
I haven't flown sims since the old days of RBII and so I have no comparisons to fall back on. I was interested in COD but even an enthusiast on the forum advised me as a computer illiterate to stay away for a while.

What I can say is ROF is the nearest thing to real flying. I should know because most of my RL flying was in an old bi-plane.

Welcome to Rise of Flight, delighted to hear you had a postitive experience so far. RoF has really come a long way in a few years, for me it is the best prop combat sim available.

Hey,
Thanks for the warm welcome fellas! Having a blast with this sim.

I still need to figure out the views and full-realism engine management so I can hop on the full-switch servers.

Oh, finally got my display switched over. It's the handle I've been using for years in the IL-2 realm. biggrin

Thanks for the props, Greiss.

Better watch out fellas. Greiss was known as the Master of the Hellcat in Pacific Fighters. I've been on the receiving end of his skills too many times. Once he gets the hang of RoF he's going to be deadly!
