What do people here think of the movie Watchmen? I think it's a great movie adaption, with some solid acting all around. My favourite of the characters is Rorschach, but I like all the characters, and the way they all have some clearly defined strength and weaknesses. The "roughest" of them all, The Comedian, turns out to be the one who has the most realistic outlook on the world. All the scenes with him are great.
Favourite scene in the movie is probably the "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me" prison scene.
Also, the funeral scene is great, with Sound of Silence playing in the rain, and no other sounds.
The movie is also way over the top violent and gory, but IMHO it really adds to the movie as a whole. It fits the style very well. Really like this movie, just got done watching it for the first time in a while, and it looks and sound spectacular on BR
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!
I thought Rorschach was the most honest character in the movie. He also had the best story arc. The psychiatrist's interview was probably the best in the movie as far as character development and revelation. It explained all you needed to know about Rorschach, and yet still made you feel bad for him. It was his sense of commitment to what was right and what was wrong that was his undoing. It was his strict sense of morality and doing right that caused his to admit to Daniel (The Night Owl) that it's not always easy being his friend and that Daniel actually is a good friend.
After seeing Hard Candy it took me a bit to get used to seeing Patrick Wilson as The Night Owl.
I really disliked The Joker, but I have to admit he saw the world for what it is/was. The montage of the creation of Dr. Manhattan was a highlight for me. Hearing the music from Koyaanisqatsi perked my ears up, and fit remarkably well.
I really enjoyed the 'parallel' history to our history. The opening sequence was brilliantly executed, and put into context both the world's history, as well as the Watchmen's back story.

Some people have referred to Watchmen as the "thinking man's" superhero movie. Is that accurate?

you could look at it that way. i was a fan of the comic, and the movie ( other than the ending ) was a very true adaptation of the source material. and, yes, rorschach steals the movie.
that said, it's not for everybody. it's very long and gets slow in parts, and also tries a bit too hard to latch onto the 80s zeitgeist ( which i think most people who view it don't get ) but i still enjoy it.
EDIT: to be fair, the ending of the comic book didnt make much sense either. i thought the movie was an improvement in that respect.... although by saying that i am likely to be lynched by hardcore watchmen purists.

Thoroughly enjoy the movie and the style. I do wish it had more backstory on the original group though, the jump to the later group is fairly abrupt, although about as well done as it could be done for the time invested.
I liked all the characters, but Rorschach, the Joker and Manhatten do steal the show. They could've given M a loincloth or something the whole time, that was just weird. I get what they were saying, how he changed his outlook on what was important, less and less human and concerned with our ways etc, but come on man. LOL Rorschach in prison...agreed, loved it. The movie was properly brutal IMO. I'm glad they didn't try to cram it into 120 minutes and treated it as more than your basic comic-to-movie flick. I never read the original, but from what I know of the ending, I'm very pleased with the re-write--a very sound decision IMO.
Perfect soundtrack, who didn't love Sound of Silence in there? Not your typical song for a comic movie. I've got this on dvd, but I'd like to see it on blu-ray now.
I like Snyder's visuals (toroughly liked Sucker Punch too in that regard) so Watchmen by default comes high on my list. The plot and actors aren't bad either, though arguable I still prefer a more straight forward super hero story (Dark Knight) to that movie.

Yes
But, apart from Dr. Manhattan, they're not really superheroes, just ordinary people with extraordinary skills

No. It's implausible crap for poseurs. The differences between the soviets and the west were fundamentally irreconcilable and could never even remotely be triggered by the farce at the end of the film.

Yeah. He forgets to supply oxygen to his assistant on Mars, but remembers to change the size of his Jockeys when he changes his size. LOL.
My only regret is I didn't see it on the big screen. Flaws? Yeah, but they're so minor that they're easily forgivable.
The whole ending reminds me of a comment Reagan made in a speech that if aliens landed on Earth, U.S. and Russia would forget their differences and become allies.
Gotta love YouTube: From the man himself.
In that context I think the ending fits quite well. Is it perfect? Naaah. But it fits.

Well, I've added Watchmen to my Netflix queue. This thread has certainly piqued my interest in the movie.
