Hey everyone, I was wanting to try getting my xbox 360 controller on the PC, but I don't have the "PC Version" of the controller, so it won't work. I have the wireless controller and am hooking it up to PC via play n charge kit USB. I was wondering if anyone knew of any 3rd party software or anything that maybe gets the PC to recognize the controller or something? I was able to find something like that for the PS3 controller, but I don't have one lol. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

For the wireless controllers I believe you need to purchase the wireless adapter. It might be cheaper just to pick up a wired 360 controller.

i don't know the answer but i did find this thread that says that what you want to do won't work:

No you can't I have the play and charge kit. I bought it mainly to try and do that. The pc will not see your controller through the usb. The hardware just is not like that. All that cable does is supply power for the controller to send the wireless signals and charge the battery.

I call #%&*$# on that, the play and charge kit basically turns the Xbox 360 controller into a wired one. I have one, and plugged it into my PC, which then detected the controller just fine. Unfortunately it still didn't work, but that's apparently because there are no working drivers for Windows 7 64 bit... Microsoft never did bother to make their own hardware compatible with Windows, which is nothing new.

They did that because they are GREEDY!! It's all because of money. They wanted to sell there wireless receivers and actual PC-ready Xbox 360 controllers, so they don't support the play n charge kit method.

I believe you have to remove the battery while plugged in with the USB kit to use it. Otherwise it's in charge mode. Vista/7 will have the driver, but I think for XP you may have to download and install it.
I do recommend the wireless receiver though, it's hard to go back to wired.

You need the wireless adapter. As I understand it, the charge kit only supplies the controller w/ power, it doesn't include the necessary USB connection to transfer controller input information. I use an XBOX 360 controller, an off brand XBOX 360 controller, and an XBOX wireless controller via wireless adapter, all of which work out of the box w/ Windows 7. I also use the XBOX 360 Chatpad via 3rd party drivers, and as a matter of fact, this entire reply was typed w/ the XBOX 360 controller Chatpad...

I stand corrected. I was wondering, since I know you can do so on the 360, but I found an answer saying that when you do that on the 360 it's still functioning wirelessly, just not off of internal power. Mine sync's up on pc when I plug up the charge kit (I keep it on pc usb, not the 360) but like Brennus said, it only syncs for gameplay through the receiver, but powered by usb--like on the 360 apparently.

I'm curious about the 3rd party driver you found for the chat pad. That sounds mighty convenient, does it function as a regular keyboard? I've wondered why MS never enabled that to get more optional control buttons possible for 360 games. It would be nice for pc use just as a basic keyboard, I keep a small additional keyboard for that kind of thing already. This would be even better.

It's a 3rd party ALPHA driver that only works w/ wired XBOX 360 controllers (for the moment), but it works w/ both Windows XP and Windows 7. You have to disable Driver Authentication for Windows 7, and you'll get a couple of BSOD's if you unplug the controller while the driver is loaded, but it works. Here's a link to the driver, which also includes a wiki page:

Wired of course. The aftermarket wireless controllers will work wirelessly because they come with a sensor you plug into the console.
If you have one of those.
