For the wireless controllers I believe you need to purchase the wireless adapter. It might be cheaper just to pick up a wired 360 controller.

i don't know the answer but i did find this thread that says that what you want to do won't work: http://forums.xbox.com/36067990/PrintPost.aspxNo you can't I have the play and charge kit. I bought it mainly to try and do that. The pc will not see your controller through the usb. The hardware just is not like that. All that cable does is supply power for the controller to send the wireless signals and charge the battery. I believe you have to remove the battery while plugged in with the USB kit to use it. Otherwise it's in charge mode. Vista/7 will have the driver, but I think for XP you may have to download and install it. I do recommend the wireless receiver though, it's hard to go back to wired.

You need the wireless adapter. As I understand it, the charge kit only supplies the controller w/ power, it doesn't include the necessary USB connection to transfer controller input information. I use an XBOX 360 controller, an off brand XBOX 360 controller, and an XBOX wireless controller via wireless adapter, all of which work out of the box w/ Windows 7. I also use the XBOX 360 Chatpad via 3rd party drivers, and as a matter of fact, this entire reply was typed w/ the XBOX 360 controller Chatpad...

I stand corrected. I was wondering, since I know you can do so on the 360, but I found an answer saying that when you do that on the 360 it's still functioning wirelessly, just not off of internal power. Mine sync's up on pc when I plug up the charge kit (I keep it on pc usb, not the 360) but like Brennus said, it only syncs for gameplay through the receiver, but powered by usb--like on the 360 apparently.
I'm curious about the 3rd party driver you found for the chat pad. That sounds mighty convenient, does it function as a regular keyboard? I've wondered why MS never enabled that to get more optional control buttons possible for 360 games. It would be nice for pc use just as a basic keyboard, I keep a small additional keyboard for that kind of thing already. This would be even better.
