Has anyone actually seen them deploy? I've been trying to pay attention to this aspect of the sim, but I can't remember either hearing or seeing them come out.

IIRC, in RL they were spring-loaded and should've popped out as soon as a wing moved slowly enough through the air. Read: Not enough wind pressure on the leading edge: Slat(s) pop(s) out.

I've not seen them...I thought they were automatic depending on airspeed?

I just checked and I saw them. They only pop out prominently (and briefly) when you pull some Gs in a flat turn, so I guess it can be easy to miss .. smile I tried putting the 109 in a steep climb to bleed off all my speed and checked the slats while doing so. Nothing happened.

I'm not 100% certain they should pop out under these conditions or at which angle of climb they still can and should pop out. (Could be that their own weight holds them in if your climb is too steep, *shrug*). In a shallower climb I *think* I saw them move briefly .. but not as prominently as in the tight turn.

^ Shouldn't do anything in the 109. They were automatic.

The slats worked off air pressure. The best way to test if they work is to do a landing.

They are certainly not spring loaded.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Well, there had to have been some kinda spring involved... otherwise they wouldn't have popped out. AFAIK they weren't actuated in any "active" way, but simply "pushed out" by some sort of mechanism once the wing wasn't travelling fast enough for the air pressure to "keep them pushed in".

This diagram shows the flight-controls of the 109E. As you can see, the slats' mechanisms aren't connected to anything under pilot control.

Do you see any springs?

Why is one slat out and the other one in? Most certainly because they are spring operated. NOT!!!

The slats on the 109 work just fine. There was no method to lock or unlock the slats in flight. Operation is purely aerodynamic.

Though the BF1110 slats in game seem welded closed smile

The Slat locking key is there for the Tiger Moth which has a Slat lock control in therear cockpit on the forward right cockpit wall.
