Howdy All,
Well, Cliffs of Dover ain't working on my system so here I am dragging my humbled me to another sim!
Happy to say that I just purchased BoB II and downloading. Always kept an eye on this one but never made the plunge until now. Not sure why, but I need a He 111, Hurri, Bf 109, Ju 87 and over the Channel large formations fix ...

I'm also downloading the bob 2.11 update & multi skin patch, that should get me started, right?

Cheers,
Slug

Welcome to BoB II!

You are right, updates 2.11 and multi skin patch gets you started formidably. In fact you don't need anything else in order to enjoy BoB II to the fullest as these patches contain the bets of the best in terms of updates.

Welcome aboard, we've had a few posts here and at the Bob Dev Group forum http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=10 from people who had a nice new hot rig ready for simming in expectation of CoD landing ready to fly. Shame to see it sitting there idle!

BOBII has the advantage it has been patched to the best possible state already, and is very stable. Plus it has a couple of things which will be hard for CoD to match for quite a while:

- adaptive dogfighting AI superior to any WWII sim
- dynamic campaign which can be played from single pilot, squadron or campaign commander level
- unparalleled authenticity, with virtually every fighting aircraft in the LW (Luftflotte 2 & 3) and RAF order of battle, and all fighter command airfields in Groups 10, 11, and 12 faithfully represented.

Dive in and feel free to ask questions...

H

Cliffs of Dover looks stunning, but frame rate will kill it for most. I bought IL2 when it first came out and only now do I have a PC that can do the sim justice. I love IL2 BTW. What you have, IMHO, in BoB is the best historical sim of the battle of Britain that has ever been released. Want to see what going up against several hundred bandits looks like? This is the only sim, to my knowledge that has ever done that. The sim was a bit ropey on first release but now, thanks to some exceptionally talented and dedicated people, we have a sim that that is one of the very, very best.

Enjoy!

Paul

Thx All for the warm welcome !
Only flew around for 1 hour or so, RL got in the way again, but darn it, this is a keeper.

Upon setting up my stick I tried one of the training missions where I'm supposed to shoot down a docile Bf 109. Who's the pilot on that crate? A young Adolf Galland I suspect... Never managed to get close enough for a clean kill, the bugger was all over the sky doing some fancy but totally realistic maneuvers.
AI is way beyond anything I expected.

Then had a quick go attacking large formations. That was memorable ! Talk about a target-rich environment. Not sure how I managed to dive through twice without colliding. Poured a good burst & scratched a Do 17 I think.
Totally immersive. Bravo to the team that developed the patches and enhancements.

On a side note, is it possible to disable the tiny icons running on the edge of the screen indicating friendlies / enemies position? What about the artificial horizon top right?

Also, I'm learning TrackIR 5 (new gadget to me) and noticed that upon firing, the tracers head towards where my head is physically leaning, not the reticule. For instance, if I'm leaning slightly left in the cockpit and fire, I will hit empty space somewhere left of the reticule / target.
Did I set up something wrong or is it a known issue? If it is, I don't really mind. I may not use TrackIR in the long run. Neck-ache is starting plus my wife is having a great time shooting photos of me looking at my monitor with my nose pointing up at the ceiling. She then emails to mates...

Cheers,
Slug

Hi and welcome ro BOBII. First I want to invite you to become a member of the A2A BOBII Forums (General, Technical, and Q&A). Most of our expert players and the BDG hang out there most days so you will get the most help there. Here is a link:

http://a2asimulations.com/forum/index.php

Recommendation:
1. Read the "sticky" threads at the BOBII forums for hints, advice and fixes.
2. Review the User Manual (it is located in your BOBII folder in the Docs folder) after you have installed the BOBII 2.11 Update.

Re: the info bar & all that

If you dig around the config screen you can disable all of that. I'd recommend digging into the .ini file. There's a lot in there to play with.

Thx All,

Been digging into that bdg file & managed to set my preferences. So many parameters my head is spinning, maybe it's my ongoing struggle with trackIR. Can't set the deadzone properly and my shooting is still all over the place.

Cheers,
Slug

It is a real challenge to actually shoot anything down in this sim...as it should be. Practice against a Stuka or a lone bomber (lots) before you try an ME109 and don't be too ambitious with the enemy AI setting either....

This is a superb sim... enjoy!

duck If you get a kill at all he will make you work for it,no easy gimmes here.If you get involved against multiple bogies you had better have eyes in the back of your head and be on top form smile
The sim is very adjustable so make the most of the options and help threads ,good luck.

I received this Friday night and I am pleasantly surprised by the major improvements from the original version. The visuals and sound are superb! I only regret that I waited so long. Of course, an upgraded computer two years ago helps. With COD I'll probably need a better card and more memory, but for now I'll enjoy this ride. I'll check the other web site for technical advice, and thank this forum for steering back to this great sim. There was some mention of another upgrade patch version 2.12 in the making. Any idea of the content and when this might be released?

Hi, thanks for the post and I am happy you are enjoying BOBII. Yes, all the players who provide the tips, hints, and help hang out at the A2A BOBII forums but SimHQ has always been a friend to BOBII and was our first home for BOBI development.

We also have a good User Manual (located in the BOBII folder, in the Docs folder) which you will need to unserstand and select the 100's of options and keys).

Some of our BDG volunteers are having some serious personal problems so the 2.12 Update is up in the air. Just one of the problems with a small volunteer team doing all the BOBII updates, enhancements, and fixes.

I have got COD up and running smoothly but keep on coming back to BOB.. Its the campaign immersion that is the deciding factor. COD is beautiful but souless to me.

Had one of those gaming moments in BOB last night after scrambling against some Stuka's.. managed to pepper one and sat flying level gleefully watching it spiral down only to be rudely shaken by a diving ME109, managed to avert disaster and limped home (or nearest base) resembling a plane shaped lump of swiss cheese.. Brilliant.

Yes, that's what BoBII excels at, those out of the blue what-the-heck moments...

Speaking of 2.12 update we are working on the bomber AI at the moment and I had one of those BoBII 'what the' moments today. I was trailing a pack of Heinkels boring down on Croydon, trying to get in a squirt or two without getting slaughtered by the return fire, when suddenly the gruppe broke in two and half fled for home while the rest pressed on. I had to choose quickly whether to order the squadron after the attacking or the retreating Heinkels...I chose the attackers, to try and persuade them against going through to the target too...we convinced one more to break off before they unloaded. A nice new twist to the AI thx to Buddye again.

Other WIP for 2.12 includes a raft of insanely beautiful and detailed objects from Ben, and a complete rework of the AAA gun numbers and placements by Stickman with unparalleled historical accuracy.

Teaser? Oh all right...how about this glimpse of the remodelled Brighton Beach from Ben?

Blimey, that's nice smile

And the main point is that this is England. Now and Then.

Ben's London and all the other places are England, not some generic other place.

The 2.11 London is pretty accurate. I bite my tongue here, but goodness, the East End Docks were *the* reason for the shift in the bombing raids. Not not to model the docks (IL2CoD) is neglect and portrays a disregard of what this is all about (= historical recreation.)

What the hell. Gamers are fickle and buy from screenshots.

"Ah yes, Michael (Parkinson)," Bader replied, "But these Fockers were Messerschmitts..."

Welcome to BOBII. Your might want to sign up at the A2A BOBII forums as that is where we mostly hang out.

You get the 2.11 Update here (it is the only Patch you need, will need to read the release notes on the 2.11 read me text):

http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=21865

Yes, both downloads are self-installers. All you need is the base BOBII game and the BOBII 2.11 Update. The 2.11 MultiSkin is optional but your PC will require 500 MB video RAM (MultiSkin provides the actual squad markings for the RAF and LUF A/C in the BOB).

The User Manual is in the BOBII folder in The Docs folder after you install the BOBII 2.11 Update.

You will need to read the Sticky Threads on the BOBII Technical forum to set up your game and avoid issues.
