Where the ocean meets the sky
Hello,

only a question: can we at any time in the futue have seaplanes, i mean land and start on water, in RoF ?
I do not mean tomorrow or next month, or whether this is even a faint idea at the horizon, but whether this would be possible at all ?

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

My impulses:
- Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 (nifty monoplane terror)
- Macchi M.3 (flexible, with two forward firing guns/cannons)
- British Curtis or Felixstowe flying boats (lots of gunners)

Grigorovich M-9 with its cannons and improvised defensive gunner would be neat, as would some of the single seat or Austrian designs or the SPAD S.XIV.

Basically, it would be a really neat idea for an expansion.

That would be sweet but then we would need coastal maps and dreadnought Battleships.

A North Sea coast expansion would work quite well imo. Both sides used Airships in daylight extensively for scouting and anti sub/ship duty, GB North Sea airships and Central Zepps would both be very cool to intercept. GB had 100s of small/medium aiships out patrolling the North sea, the UK Zepp land bombings are just more famous.

Dogfights between Entente and Central seaplanes were quite common, the Central seaplanes were good performers but the Entente flying boats had decent performance also, along with plenty of guns.

A map adding the North Sea and the Channel coast will be ana amazing addition! Intercepting airships and enemy seaplanes a blast! IIRC there were some anti-ship raids as well!

Always liked the Felixstowe. In that photo it looks like it inspired the Catalina. The others look pretty cool as well. Especially the Hansa-Brandenburg W.29.

Let's hope it will be possible.
A couple of seaplanes would add a lot of value to a Belgium/North Sea map. Would make for a great add-on!

Yes Please! thumbsup

...now THIS is something the devs should consider a "paid add-on".

But the idea of paying for the new career some posters considered? That should have been there/more complete at launch?

...No thanks.

Yes, I agree. I wish they would have made a W.29 or any seaplane instead of the gun boat .... were is the money in that?

Dueling seaplanes, coastal patrols with 2-seaters ... bring it on!

Thanks, some wonderful pictures - the Felixstowe indeed looks like the predecessor of the PBY Catalina, only one wing more.

All nice ideas, however i simply wanted to know whether this is possible, in RoF - and if there is the slightest chance that we will have a seaplane to start and land on water, in "Rise of Flight" ? (Even if it only happens after the Zeppelin lol smile )

Anyone of the dev team reading this here ?

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

You might want to try the official RoF forum, but I'm pretty sure it will be possible if the dev team sets their minds to it. I don't think there is some sort of technological hindrance, just a matter of priority...

If you guys add it, I'll buy it!!!!! I'll be flying ROF for years-not interested in any other flightsim at this time...... It's the only sim I've ever flown that makes me feel like I'm actually FLYING!!!!

Whatever you boys add, I'll buy!!!!!!!

Would certainly add some interesting moments to that on-line lake map. Might be fun.

I concur, and the priorities they've been adhering to are sensible; for now implementing the new career mode for the many in the SP crowd and producing planes to flesh out the stable as they can so the sim gets more richly populated is smart. I'm with Copter, I'm in in for the long haul too!

That said, one day it will be terrific if water flying can be added. Not only is there a marvelous assortment of aircraft to draw on, but water flying is quite a different experience compared to land based planes.

This sim never gets old for me, even just joyriding around. The latest environmental effects are great (and the upcoming morning fog is highly anticipated), the artillery spotting/photorecon is very exciting and will add even more dimension to the sim when we get it, and the addition of multiseat aircraft is brilliantly implemented...beyond the capabilities and challenges of those new ships, nothing gets the motivation up for a newcomer like being there and seeing the sim in its spendor while occupying the crew positions in the bombers or DFW that they didn't have to pay a dime for.

On that subject, I've been having fun with a few of my old FPS clan members getting the demo, riding along in the bombers and DFW and starting flight training.

Much as I'd enjoy seeing seaplanes and such, I'd rather see some authentic 2 seat trainers and a shared cockpit capability to aid in training first. The current method of spectating a student flying a scout and coaching them in TeamSpeak works well, but replicating a trainer would perfect the system...and the ability to say "I've got it" and take over would save a bunch of time and frustration when a student lets the plane get away from him or her. There's no shortage of willing instructors ready to help a newcomer provided they're willing to ask for help, and training has always been an authentic component of an airman's experience. This too, of course, can wait.

Love. You can know all the math in the 'Verse, but take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughtta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Shared cockpit capability not possible at the moment. No one has this capability a far as we know.

Seaplanes not possible at the moment.

If you want all this built tell all your friends to buy ROF and airplanes. That's all I can say when I see threads like this.

Wow, hope seeing topic this didn't catch you at a bad time, ya almost sound annoyed.

I don't think anyone's caterwauling or complaining, just blue skying about possible ways ROF might go in the future. Catfish just articulated an idea that's come up before, since seaplanes did have a role in WW I aerial combat and would be a fascinating additional dimension to the sim.

Actually, Microsoft's FSX does. I haven't messed with it since I'm too busy enjoying ROF and FSX is Tinkertoys by comparison, but it does exist.

Darn right I do! How do you think I got the folks from my clan away from FPS stuff and into ROF? I call it the 'Nag Method.' It didn't really take much prodding, I must say neaner

Seems to be working; I expect our Misfit Flying Corps will be growing in short order, just had to get a few of the regular members flying to seed it. Word of mouth does wonders!

You know what would be awesome? A RoF charity plane purchase! If you could persuade someone to give to a charity a like-for-like sum as spent on RoF aircraft over a given period, it might act as an incentive for players who are on the fence to go out an buy a few additional planes - in the knowledge that for every penny they drop on a new plane, an identical sum will be gifted to say, Help for Heroes, the Red Cross or similar. Just challenge the community to raise as much possible for the charity and at the same time, they'd be raising funds for 777 and future development for RoF.

There must be some community members who don't really feel they need any more aircraft at the moment but who would be willing to buy a couple if it was also going to help a good cause (other than just 777).

Don't mistake economy of speech for annoyance. I'm sure he has limited time to respond, and just glad he's open to ideas like this. There's not much doubt when he's annoyed... hahaha

Yeap, money makes the flight sim world go around. Other than word of mouth, how else can this community increase in size in order to support further development? Maybe that's a new thread topic... Perhaps with the potential CoD meltdown shaping up we'll draw some of those disaffected WWII prophead types into our fold. Mul-ha-ha-ha...
