This is BS. The Stuka engine sound is the same as in IL-2. You can call me all shades of asshat under the sun if you must, but Ilya saying nothing was recycled is either a flat-out lie, or them remaking the sounds the same way it was done in IL-2.
Six years in development... and this is the outcome?
On a scale of 1 to 100 I think the issue of external engine sounds rate at approx 0.01.

Well, I don't consider option 1 valid, so that leaves us with the second one.
Probably what happened is the engines they recorded for CoD are the same / very similar to the ones recorded for IL2. In that case, what's the big deal?
As I remember it one of the big gripes with IL-2 was the inauthenticity and artificialness of the syntethized (a.k.a. lawnmover) engine sounds used. But never mind, them resurfacing here will at least keep the modders busy in the future too...
Guys - I'm willing to bet that few of us have ever heard 1940s engines (except maybe the occasional merlin), and that none of us have actually sat in the cockpit of a WWII era fighter. The fact is that essentially all movies replace the sounds entirely. We have no real source of information to judge this issue accurately. Am I happy with the sound in Il-2? Not really. Would I rather that they were an endlessly looping wave file that doesn't take into account anything other than subjective impressions and a bit of captured audio taken out of context (eg. RPM, angle from listener, airspeed)? Not terribly. Of course, that's my personal opinion.

Didn't I tell you guys that no one makes an engine from scratch. All they do is keep what they have and clean out the legacy coding and add in third-party software. Heady89 and myself listed all the engines currently in use and how long they have been around. But for some odd reason the il2 community thinks il2 is special and doesn't have the same laws of game development applied to them.
Now if only we could combine the strengths of WoP with il2: COD and throw in some other lesser known flight sims into the mix to create an epic flight sim.
We have no real source of information to judge this issue accurately.
Damn.. I have to post this video again it seems.

I beg to differ:
DB601-engined Bf 109 E-4 flyby. I'd say that clip's pretty much the equivalent of the F3-"flyby"-camera. Well, at least the visuals are.
I've been to exactly one airshow in my life. Nevertheless: I had the opportunity to listen to a Corsair, a Spitfire and a P-51D (among others) while there. A dedicated sim-soundman should have no real trouble collecting enough samples over a period of seven years. It's not like these birds aren't flying anymore. At least Spits, Hurris and the Emil should be (more or less) readily available for sound recording.

Any account from a WWII pilot who flew spits or hurris will always tell you just how loud and distinctive that merlin is, even with a flying helmet on and canopy closed.. Why do you think the RAF battle of britain flight wear modern helmets with noise cancelling gear inside?.. because its bleedin so loud it can damage your hearing..

I totally agree with everything in this post, since I filter all of my sounds through FRAPS, compile them through Windows Movie Maker, and then run them for playback through Youtube.
The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

There's also a nice anecdote in "The blonde knight of Germany" (Hartmann-bio). His mechanic knew that, if he wanted to be heard, he had to yell at Hartmann during the first minutes after he had returned from a mission. Even with headphones, the noise in the cockpit must've been deafening. Why else would they have used those "throat-mics" for radio-comms?

Life shouldn't be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body! Better to skid in sideways, cheesburger in one hand, martini in the other, body worn out, screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride!"
All I can say is that I fly Tiger Moths, a Chipmunk and a PT-19 Cornell in my flying club, and even those puny 4-banger engines sound far more potent than the ridiculously lawn mower-like engines in the Il-2 series.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!
I have a Checkflight CD with some really neat original sounds....startups, flybyes, in cockpit.... I've had it forever. Closest reference now I can find was this:
My sounds are all post BOB however, P-38, P47, Spit Mk14, 109 G2, and P51. Still neat. The P-47 startup is awesome and of course the 109 is always unique.
Hopefully someone will mod in some better sounds. Or someone go over to the BIS forums and beg one of the modders to release their custom sounds for il2. =]
The sounds are the best with this mod, but they are supposed to release new sounds in the next update for Invasion44 mod.
Its a nice mod, but seriously those in-cockpit sounds ain't much to cheer about, i like the IL2Cod ones better. Outdoor might be another question tho, which is also the area where Cod could use some improvement.
Ah, ah, classic, it looks to be impossible to show any videos, once a game has just been issued, without putting obligatory wrong marking on the aircrafts !!!
Never heard a G50 in RL, but that sounds much more like it. I just hope that planes that were much more important in RL than the G50 (109, Hurri, Stuka, Spit) will get external sounds that are at least comparable to the G50's quality. No matter what the Devs say about new sound having been recorded: What I've heard so far from 109, Hurri & Co. sounds exactly like Il-2's lawnmowers (externally).
