I think that both 'JayPee' and 'ricnunes' made valid points about the FLIR White Hot/Black Hot thing. As far as I can make out, while YES the images can in fact appear to be WHITE hot and BLACK hot - and are indeed called so - they are in fact the lowest and highest extremes of the green color spectrum. 'WHITE' being the lightest and 'BLACK' being the darkest - as yes, I've also read that the human eye can distinguish the most shades of the color green.

Hi Flyboy,

it is because the wavelength of the color green is in the middle of the human eye's ability to recognise the spectrum of colors. The sequence is violet - blue - green - yellow - orange - red. Infrared means "below red", ultraviolet means "above violet". It means the wavelength ot infrared is bigger, than that of the red what your eyes still can se, and wavelength of ultraviolet is smaller than that of visible violet. Any of those "scale-edge-colors" have low visibility, that's why G.I.-s have red color handlights. It's not so easily visible from a distance.

I hope this helps explain the difference between DTV and DVO.
As a curiousity, the DVO, and similar optical sights is the reason why the gunner sits in the front seat in most helicopters. It would be too cumbersome to make the lenses&mirrors sight in the nose go to the rear co-cockpit. However, some newer helicopters, like the Tiger, and cancelled Comanche have the pilot in the front seat as they have discarded the optical sights, and have just cameras.

Does anyone have a link showing how the mirrors work on that pivoting head?
