It's great to see the development, but this 2011; not 2001.

[Sarcasm on]The colors looks hideous. And look at the planes, it seems the screens were taken from a bugs bunny cartoon. Jane's Attack Squadron look much better. J.A.S has created a standard in graphics and animation that IL2 can't seem to match /[Sarcasm off]
Amazing now a bunch of pixelly screenshots turned into the best selling WW2 aerial combat simulation of all time.

I don't know, but not too many people were playing PC in 1999. We were too busy playing Golden Eye on N64 or just now learning about HL2/TFC mod but we all had #%&*$# PCs and weren't able to run it. No, I would say most gamers started playing il2 probably around 2003 when DSL/Cable were cheaper and faster and most gamers had it.

The PC flight simulation market was at its peak in the period between 1996 and 2002. The titles released during that time: Longbow, Longbow2, EAW, CFS, SDOE, USNF and all of its derivitives, Falcon 4.0, EEAH, IL2, Red BAron II/3d, Janes F-15, F/a 18, EF2000, CFS2, FS 95, 98, 2000, 2002, even games like iF16 and F22 Raptor sims out the ying yang. These are the ones that just popped into my head. You missed out on the real golden age my friend. By 2003 it was starting to go downhill. EA closed down Janes, Microprose went out of business, Dynamix was long gone, and just about every other game developer either went independent or went on to something else that generated a much better revenue stream for the cost of development.

Ah, the glory days. I remember one of the monthly PC gaming mags having seven, yes seven, aircombat sims in for review. Anyone remember the Luftwaffe one over Spain? Luftwaffe Aces or something? It was a total lemon though. Luftwaffe Commander?

Yep, Luftwaffe Commander released by SSI around 1999. The only reason I got that game was because of SSI's involvement with Flanker 2.

In SSIs defense, they never really were a simulation developer. Flanker and all of it's derivatives (to include our latest A-10C sim) were really the only successful simulation they developed. They were first and primarily a wargame producer. Remember Panzer General? Steel Panthers? Tanks!? Silent Hunter? Luftwaffe Commander was a mess for sure though. Too bad, inside that mess was potential for a pretty good game.

Too bad, inside that mess was potential for a pretty good game. SSI had no defence, they had no business releasing that travesty. £30 was a fair chunk of money back then. But Ubi bought them out, so somebody walked away with a bunch of cash and proved that crime does pay.

I think luftwaffe commander was the only sim I didn't buy in that period! Ef2000 was one of my alltime favourite sims, bloody he'll it looked goodand played well in it's day! Yup it was just non stop sims back then, we even used to be able to play on dodgy old dialup quite well. Hopefully COD will help bring back some of the fun from back then.

Sabre ace was another one that I quite enjoyed, not as pretty to look at but still entertaining!

Who are all these noobs who keep whining? PS: Doug we REALLY need a big hunk of limburger cheese smiley for these folks...to go with their whine. Honestly, you've seen a few vids and a bunch of screenshots and constantly #%&*$# like little girls. Go away!

LOL Nixer, hit the nail on the head! I love how they proclaim to be all about full immersion, or realism, and how a $50.00 game should deliver it all, while sitting at their computer desk with their plastic joystick mouse and pedals, staring into their monitor, all the while complaining that the game isn't realistic, maybe being doused by a bucket of burning petrol when they get shot down will help the immersion , cheap little realism builder as well It is a game, and quite a good looking one at that, I can't wait!!!
