I'm going to preorder COD, but if I buy it on Ubishop Australia its AUD$90. If I buy it on Ubishop UK (through a proxy), it's AUD$56 or if I get it a Ubishop USA, its AUD$50.

I've read on this forum that COD is region specific. Does anyone know if the UK version can be used in Australia?

Thanks

Mate you can now pre order both eds in oz through EB Games.

$89 for normal edition and I think $109 for collectors

Thanks Nick

My problem isn't getting an Oz copy, its paying AUD$90 when the rest of the world only pays ~AUD$50 for a digital distribution.

If the UK version works in Oz, I'll buy there and save some money. If all Aussies did this for every game we bought, EA and UBI would have to stop their price gouging and compete with the rest of the world.

Or you can just purchase it once it's made available through Steam.

Yep, I agree with you totalspoon, I'm more than fed up paying $90 in retail here when you can get the same thing from overseas for half the price (and then retail shops make a drama and go cry in the media... go figure)

I'm personally planning to buy the digital version from GetGame in the UK (it's a digital shop attached to Eurogamer), where it's sold at around AUD$50 and you won't need to use any proxy to get it from them.

hmmm ... you'll likely have to pay about $20 for postage.

Steam in Aus won't help either. They'll just do the same price as retail over here. Case in point check out DOW2: Retribution. Steam it's $60, everywhere else it's $30.
It's pretty ridiculous that we Aussies have to pay that much for a digital distribution. The old arguments of us being so remote just doesn't stack up and this just shows it's pure price gouging by the local distributors.

It doesn't really affect me as I get everything from overseas now but even if it's $20 postage I'd still pay that and get it from overseas and screw the local distributors just as they're blatantly screwing us.

EDIT: On topic, I don't see how they could make a PC game region specific other than restricting sales here. They can't account for them multitudes of different PC hardware that's out there. Sure it's easily locked on things that are built all to one standard, like consoles, tv's, but I don't see how they can lock my DVD drive bought from Hong Kong that's going to play on my made in China monitor. Someone with a bit more knowledge can probably better answer.

Quake 2 tried to do it by checking what Windows Regional and Language Options you have set... if you had an AUS copy of quake 2 it would complain if your language was set to somewhere other than English Australian.

that said, I doubt they would start doing that to games again?

Shipping from UK shops is rarely an issue (plus in COD case, you can order a digital version from UK and end up with a total $50 instead of $90 from Ubi Oz or a retailer, end of story), I still get a number of games priced $90-100 at EB for $35-50 from ozgameshop.com, shipping included... Makes you wonder..

PS: I just sent an email to Ozgameshop to check whether they were planning to offer CoD

The staff of my nearest EB Games are helpful, cool and likeable young blokes. I'll happily spend my CoD dollars locally to support their jobs if I can (thnx Nick10). Sure, its a personal choice, but I'll gladly pay a voluntary 'tax' to help employment in my own community. Its good to get a bargain, but is saving 20 or so bucks really so critical for a game which we run on computer and controller rigs worth thousands? Where else will those nice young game nerds get work anyhow?

I'd be all fine paying an extra to help local jobs. I can do a step in this direction, but retailers need to do a step in our direction instead of hoping that some sort of nationalism is going to fill their pockets - not going to happen as far as I'm concerned.

Me too. If the prices are roughly the same. Sorry, but if there's almost a 50% markup I won't be buying here, retail box or otherwise.

But there's no excuse for digital distributions being almost double of overseas prices.

yeah - i spent $20 on a round of drinks last night. i'd rather pay a bit extra for that peace of mind of knowing i can go back to the store and demand a refund if the disk is buggered or whatever.

I'm sure you have friends on your Steam friends list that are from countries that have the game cheaper, so why not ask them to gift you the game and then you can pay them back. Plenty of people do that on Steam. We have a Kiwi in my realism unit that we do this for when he wants a game.

A friend of mine had his Steam accounts banned. He started a second steam account using a proxie in the US and was buying games at US prices and gifting them to his Australian account. He thinks maybe they clicked to what was happening as his only credit card was Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Anyway, they've banned both of his accounts and he can't play the games he legally paid for. He's not happy.

Thanks for the heads up FlyingMonkey, I'll buy from GetGames too.
