Wow. Not enough to reduce it to tin foil, but then to run the shards through a grinder.

Too bad they couldn't be converted to QF-14s and die a warrior's death.

Can't even stomach this vid...

Can someone explain to me why? Why are we doing this? What's the purpose? We don't do this to thousands of other aircraft... Why is the Tomcat being singled out like this? What is the purpose of this destruction so soon after retirement? I see hundreds of Corsair's and Crusaders still wrapped up at the DM, so why not kill those off before the Tomcat? This makes no sense to me... Are we not going to leave a few around as Warbirds?

Oh, man Radar!

On the the 42nd Anniversary of US Navy Fighter Weapons School too!!!!

To answer one of the previous questions: The main reason why is because of concern of parts falling into the hands of the Iranians. Preposterous one might say--but some parts did make it to Iran doing the Iran Contra affair and in the 90s via black market. So I guess they aren't taking any chances.

Gah...terrible watching this. It was terrible enough seeing a VF-213 F-14D be flown in to near Chicago to be retired for the museum near here. They landed her, taxied her to the ramp, then ran in idle until the engines were bone dry of fuel to be sure that after demilitarization she couldn't be flown off the airfield. Do you know how hard it was to listen her her engines sputter out and her struggle to stay alive. The pilot and RIO afterwards told us that even though the tanks were dry, the engines continued to struggle to stay on for a little while longer, as if she was saying "NO! I want to live!"

It was like putting down a cat...

It's also the reason why I can't go to Tucson anymore...I can't bear the sight of seeing these mighty warriors--some who had come back straight from Iraq and/or still wearing "Last Tomcat Cruise" colors--wrapped in plastic sitting in the desert as if these cats were permanently put in a litter box.
