MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- He was repeatedly rejected by military recruiters and got into uniform at 16 after lying about his age. But Frank Buckles would later become the last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I. Buckles, who also survived being a civilian POW in the Philippines in World War II, died of natural causes Sunday at his home in Charles Town, biographer and family spokesman David DeJonge said in a statement. He was 110. Buckles had been advocating for a national memorial honoring veterans of the Great War in the nation's capital. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/28/AR2011022801115.html

According to wiki only two WWI vets are still alive today, both in the UK.

110 years old..that's amazing. The Germans couldn't get him in WWI, the Japanese failed to snuff his life out in WWII, and he lived to be that old, in spite of what two world wars must have cost him in mental and physical hardship. They don't make 'em like that any more!

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Hard to imagine how this "War to end all wars" will eventually become like the Battle of Hastings or any other distant, remote happening. Same thing will eventually happen with even WWII.
