Hi all,

I am new here, and I have been looking for gaming expertise, and this looks like the place!

I have EECH 2 from Strategy First with updates, and was able to get it to run with some difficulties on a Vista 32 computer. I now have a Win 7 64-bit computer, and have found no way to get the game to run. After installation it plays the intro video ok, and I can set all the options, I decline the voice control option, but when loading a flight I get the "The Program has encountered an error and will shut down" - except that it doesn't, and I have to use Ctr-Alt-Del and log-off to get out. I have tried all compatibility settings, run as admin. etc. to no avail. I have also tried to move the program out of the Programs folder directly to C: drive - all to no avail.

Has anybody succeeded in running the game in Win 7?

Sorry if my naming was confusing - it is Enemy Engaged 2 v. 1.02 by Strategy First. I have been screwing around some more, and got the game to open, I could set all the options and get to the Free Flight opening screen OK. I then exited to eat dinner, but now, when trying to restart the game, I get the company logo, then a black screen followed by a note that "EE2.exe has accounted an error" and the option to close the program. This sequence has happened before, the game will run on the first opening after installation, then never again - I am mystified.

I'm not sure if it will run under windows 7 64bit. It might be something to do with UAC, although it is different UAC than in Vista.

Why don't you get EECH from Gog.com and get the allmods1.13 patch. EE2 isn't really that good compared to EECH + AllMods.

Here's a comparison...

http://www.eechcentral.com/wiki/index.php?title=Enemy_Engaged_2

Although also no guarantees that EECH will run from the threads linked above.

Thanks for the good info, I will look into it. And my problem is not a UAC issue, as I have tried to turn it off. The reason I hate to give up is that I had the very same problems with Vista 32 on another computer, and somehow got it to run - but I can't remember exactly how!

Hi Johnost,

Did you try running it under compatibility mode ? (right click on the shortcut and select which more you want to run under)

How about running as the administrator of the machine (right click shortcut and select Run as Administrator). Even if you are in the local administrator group in windows 7 there are some things you can't do. Running as machine administrator is sometimes necessary if permissions are stopping something running.

Cheers,

Andy

Sorry, should have tried it first...

To run under compatibility you:

Right click on shortcut.
Select Properties.
Click on Compatibility tab.
Select which level of compatibility you want.

The system should remember the setting.

Cheers,

Andy

Yes Andy, I have tried every available compatibility mode, "run in 640x480 mode", as administrator, etc. Also with/without UAC, as well as placing the program directly on the C: drive instead of in Programs(x86). The Microsoft (software) reason for the problem is "Program incompatibility" - and I am beginning to believe it - LOL! The game has been running when first opened after reinstalling, but never again after the first try, I just get the message "EE2.exe has stopped working".

I have been looking in the Forums for anybody that has EE2 working with Win 7 64-bit, but nobody has come forward, so it seems a lost cause.

Hi, Delete the intro videoes in your Videos Folder there should be 4..I also installed in Windows XP SP3 Compatibility mode??? I have the game working in S3D under Win764bit wink

I see a Resolution in Widescreen mode of 3072x768. Does this game support Triple Screens?? If so why can't I get it to work in Triple Screen mode??

EDIT: Got it working just need to tweak it a bit:

WOW - that is some wideangle Nephilim! But you are the first person I have heard running EE2 on W7-64, and it makes me wonder what I have not tried. I have currently given up and uninstalled the game. The general pattern - with variations - has been that the game runs the first time after a fresh install, and on subsequent starts I get the message "EE2.exe has stopped working". I have also tried deleting the intro video with no difference. What is S3D?

S3D is Stereoscopic 3D like what the nVidia 3D Vision kit offers.. wink

Also I found that FRAPS conflicts with EE2 and I get that error. Do you have FRAPS Running with EE2??

EE2 is working Fine now NP's as of yet..

No FRAPS here. I have downloaded EECH with the allmod, and it runs fine, but looks more dated than EE2.

When you installed EE2 did you run the installer.exe in Compatibility mode ?? (win XP SP3)??

Yes EE2 is Dx9 and EECH is Dx7 i Believe..the only bad thing about EE2 is you can NOT fly the Longbow, but hey maybe they will release the source code for EE2 like they did for EECH.. that would be sweet..

Does anyone know how to turn OFF speech recognition completely in windows7 64bit??? It does NOT shut Off completely even tho I turn it off in the options screen. It is conflicting with EE2 and making some CTD's..Perhaps another problem.

Well as a workaround I leave it in Sleep mode or just On all together.. If it is Off then the ingame wants to use it and CTD's the game by turning it on..

How do you set the installation to compatibility mode? I have autorun turned off, but when I insert the EE2 disk, it starts spinning for several minutes - I don't know what it is doing - and then goes directly to the installation screen. In other words I get no opportunity to set compatibility mode for the installer. Does your installation disk work differently?

I see no way to eliminate the Speech Recognition in W7, but you can uninstall the EE2 Speech Recognition program separately from EE2.

I have been away for a couple of days, but appreciate your continued interest in helping.

Hi Johnost,

I'm working from memory here, but as I remember it:

The disk spinning at the start is the machine loading the installer program from the disk.

When you get the installer on screen hold down Ctrl and Alt keys and press and release Del key.

You should get a blue screen with a list of options. The bottom one is Start Task manager, click on it.

You should then get a wee box appear. One of the tabs at the top should be Applications. Click on it.

You should now see listed the installer application. Click once on it to highlight it and then on the End Task button. It will as you to confirm your choice - do so.

That should get you back to the windows desktop.

Now, click on the start button and then on Computer. RIGHT CLICK on the cd/dvd drive and select explore.

You should get a list of the files on the cd. Find the installer one and RIGHT CLICK on it then select PROPERTIES.

You should see a dialog box and one of the tabs will be Compatibility. Click on it

Click in the wee "Run this program in compatibility mode for" box and make sure Windows XP (Service pack 3) is showing in the next line. Then click the OK button.

If you now double click the installer program it should run as if it was on a Windows Xp machine.

Hope this helps.

Andy

Thanks much Andy, that is a clever way to get around the auto install. I tried it, and it worked. I have now eliminated the intro videos and also set all 3 executables in the game folder to XP SP3 compatibility. Now the game will load every time, and I can go to set up a flight, but joystick and pedals don't work. Clicking on the OPTIONS menu will then produce the well-known "EE2.exe has stopped working" and I can only close the game.

I was excited for a while thinking I had overcome the W7 64-bit problem, but no dice. I am a stubborn fellow, but I am about to give up - can't think of any more things to try. I thank all of you for trying to help!

Well getting into the Options Screen is Hit or Miss, Sometimes it will let you in sometimes it will NOT and you get the erro message and the EXE Closes..

Also when in the Game and you are at the MAP screen do NOT click on "SITE REP" that will Almost always CTD the game as well.

Try entering a Campaign and see if you can get to the options screen that way that is more less likely to CTD but still does Most the times..

I know a PITA but at least you got it working and once you setup the Options at least you will NOT need to go there anymore.. wink

Its a shame about all the copyright regulations that I cant upload a full version merged DesertOps+EE2+mods install. The Desert Ops exe is the most stable version of EE2. Has anybody tried Desert Ops on W7 64bit?
