I'm working on making a electronic scalable map for ROF....but wanted to check something

Large Grid = A6
Has 1 thru 30 Squares inside
Each Square is divided into four (a,b,c,d)

my best guess...it is a 5,000 meter grid at the (a,b,c,d) level
so each numbered square is =10,000m x 10,000m or 10k x 10k
and each Large grid is = 60k x 60k

any chance this is right?

the scale on the printed map is worthless....take a close look

not sure about the grid but I see your point about the scale

Okay, probably a huge waste of time....but here is what I did.

Drew a 500 meter grid in Google SketchUp and than imported a map from the game and stretched it until it fit the grid. In Sketch up you can accurately measure distances and angles, so you get actual waypoint data for the flyers and bombers out there.

You can print to scale to, so you can get a map that you can use conventional aviation tools on to measure waypoint distances and bearings.

Not sure if its that valuable but fun to try and do it.

just to be accurate, the file I imported is actually one of the maps we create for our missions at WingWalkers, Old Fokkers and Black Haze "allfly" nights

I take several in game screen shots from the game map, merge them together in photoshop to get a good hi res image, add symbols and text in powerpoint. Drop that in Comic Life to get the "comic book" look. Sounds complicated, but actually doesn't take too long and gives you a decent 8 1/2 x 11 map to refer to during an event

I like having the airbase icons actually indicate the direction you will be facing when you take off and putting a texture on no mans land that actually is readible.

Excellent work mate. If it makes it any easier, this hi-res pdf map might be of help too.

http://www.aerosoft2.de/downloads/rof/GameMap_Front.pdf

I use it through an iphone and it's much easier to read and zoom than the in-game map.

The link to a file server and using an i-phone is a very cool idea. If I was rich an i-pad would be even better. Regarding the map, you would be better off if they replaced that map with the map that comes with ROF Ice Edition. It is downloadable in a similar PDF file at the ROF site under Useful Tools.

Same map but with the correct grids that align with the game. The original maps grids are not the same as in game and pretty much useless

all that fuss and I think simple is better. Made a graphic ruler and when I publish a map for a mission I can just stretch it to align with the grids. close enough

Geezer,

The map should be 1cm=7km as stated. I'm triple confirming with Loft, but all the info I ever got when we made the new map was what you see there, except the scale in the source files I made available for download is wrong.

It is correct on the printed map which you may not have.

If you check the distance between Verdun and Metz via online maps or other maps, you should see references to them being 57-59km away from each other by air and much longer by road. If you check our scale on the printed map it corresponds to roughly 57km. So we're close.

Jason

First off, your right, I don't have the map just the digital file, so the scale I took a screen shot of is off.

Second after much online research for freeware I can prove you right!

I found two tools.

The first is an online protractor that is a yahoo gadget, very elegant works well, opens up on top of anything on your desk top

The second is an online ruler program. Once you open it you can calibrate your units by measuring between two known points. Once you've done that , you can measure between any two points on the map

Process I followed was to measure one square and set it as 10,000 meters. Than I measured between Verdun and Metz and got a measurement of 57,340 meters, or 57km

Finally I layed the Protractor over the line and got a heading of 93 degrees.

Fantastic! This means I can take screen shots of mission maps in game with bases, targets, ballons, and create waypoint maps with accurate distances and headings.

[Nitpick]

And the magnetic declination is....

[/Nitpick]

Seriously, excellent work! I loves me some Wing Walker brainy types to do all the work for me!

..well I had to look up magnetic declination to make sure I knew what it was, but as said before the protractor goody is a pretty sweet tool. Don't think you can out finesse it. If my magnetic declination was anything other than true north, this baby could deal with it

and just in case folks look at the earlier part of this post, remember I was off by a factor of ten on the grid scale map

one box = 5,000 m
one number grid ( four boxes) = 10,000 x 10,000 m
one big grid like A6 = 6 number grid x 6 number grid = 60,000 x 60,000 m or 60k x 60k

Wow! Any chance you can make this into an Ipad app? That would be ultra cool! notworthy

depends on what your looking for...it looks like there is a pretty slick app for a protractor, equally as nice as the pc one I posted

regarding measuring....pixelstick looks promising, not sure if it works on the iphone, but does in the mac. It appears you can customize the scale but not sure

Thanks for the link Geezer. Unfortunately the ICE map won't load in my iphone PDF reader. The earlier one does though. For some reason the ICE version crashes every time. Perhaps it is something to do with the text layers. Not sure as I'm no whiz with that sort of thing. Perhaps someone with the correct software could resave the ice one in a simpler format.

Below is a quick comparison of the level of clarity that you can get through the phone compared to the printed map. Much easier to use than the paper or on-screen version.
