According to the Devs, the AI uses the same FM/DM as human players, and the AI can stall/spin etc. So the AI could have actually stalled and gone into a spin.
+1 on the jaw drop IF the AI is using the self induced stall/spin trick.

I've had the AI turn after and fight me even though I've shot their engine out, so they definitely ARE sneaky! And those rear gunners never give up even when their plane is spiraling down in flames they still want to get that last bullet into your forehead if they can...

......and I've seen the AI turn and run when damaged rather than stay and fight it out. You don't see that in many sims Had Manfred turn and run...chicken....

One of my 'gee whiz' moments was in (as I recall) a scripted Nieuport 11 mission. I was making passes on a convoy, shooting the trucks up as I could with my popgun, when I saw a truck go up in an explosion. Seemed a flight of SE-5s had decided to join the party! Like avenging angels they dropped out of the sky and bombed the convoy into bits while I watched. I withdrew to check on some pesky Albatri off in the distance, and the SE-5s reformed and headed off elsewhere. OK, it was a little out of place historical timeline-wise, but it was a nifty surprise =MFC=Gunloon

Love. You can know all the math in the 'Verse, but take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughtta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Would be nice if the AI turned and fled more often, more historically correct. In another WWI sim, sometimes when outnumbered a single AI will land in a field, wait a spell, then take off after you've presumably left the area. An old German trick, or so I've read That SE5 you saw spinning in, I bet he was lashing his stick and pedals back and forth cursing the RoF developers for the recovery technique...

Wodin, the event was what you thought it was. I've seen this behavior on the A.I. S.E.5a before and the Camel. It may be possible on other a/c but I have not observed it.

The rotary could not re-circulate oil,so it had to dump it out onto the airframe. Castor oil, consequently, covered the entire aircraft after a short time. Even worse, atomized caster oil blew into the cockpit and impregnated the pilot. Pilots needed scarves to clean their goggles and faces. Since castor oil is a laxative, pilots suffered serious consequences after a few hours of flight. But such was the need for maximum power http://www.txsquadron.com/forum/index.php
