I'm a little curious because I have completely lost track of hardware and stuff. I'm running this:
I'm assuming this is more mid-high hardware?
Dell Studio XPS 1650 Win7 x64 Intel i7 1.60 ghz 6gb ram 300mb HD ATI Mobility Radeon 4670
Just curious how it SHOULD be performing, at points with some games it seemed to be doing sub-par (SC2, parts of FC2.0, Arma2 demo) I usually keep the settings around medium
However, I did have to recently reinstall windows, and it seems to be performing much better due to the lack of random crap on the HD

That sounds about right, the processor isn't that fast, and the video card is so-so, all things being relative. Of course, only having 300 megabytes of HDD might also be a problem

300 mb drive might be an issue :p
Also, CPUs and GPUs for laptops are NOT as fast or powerful as the Desktop counterparts.
CPUs in laptops have things removed to lower power consumption as well as heat, in fact the Processors in laptops have a entirely different model number even though they share the same family name. Laptop/Mobile Processors are designed to run on lower power.
Same thing for the GPU. Mobility Radeon 46xx Series are nowhere near the same level of Performance as the desktop HD46xx Series. same chip, but the mobile chips are deisgned to operate on lower power.
And the Harddisk, Mobile drives run lower RPM and lower speeds, so if a game is constantly caching the drive its gonna be slow.
laptops and mobile hardware are not meant for gaming.

I have found mid and high end Dell laptops to be much slower than you'd reasonably expect for the spec. The overall bandwidth of the boards they use seem to be utterly crippled in some way. Spend some time optimising Windows, there are tons of guides online. In fact Nick Needham's guide has some excellent tips, but you'll find more if you google around. http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1208959973Skatezilla is right though, laptop processors and GPUs are in general poor for gaming unless you pay big big bucks.

Aah, I would amend that to say that "laptops and mobile hardware are not meant for gaming, at least not for the latest and greatest games." But, some reasonably priced laptops are perfectly capable of running most games at a reasonable frames. With my almost 2 year old laptop ( Processor Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz Windows Vista OS Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit with SP1 Hard Drive 320GB (7200RPM) Screen Size 15.6" HD (1366x768) RAM 4GB DDR2 667Mhz Optical Drive DVD SuperMulti with Light Scribe Direct Disc Labeling Yes Graphics Card NVIDIA 9800M GS with 512MB GDDR3 VRAM) I run FSX, among others, at playable frames. This machine only cost me around $1000 almost 2 years ago.
Hi, I'm Larry and this my brother Dayrle, and this is my other brother Dayrle.
