I had a week off work, so decided to spend 2 days in the Lake District to see the RAF doing some low level flying. I had a foreign visitor as well, two German tonka's thumbsup

Niiice. I'd like to try some of that shooting as well. It's one of the few places where you're higher than the aircraft!

Muggs, some good ones in there. Great to see the 100Sqn special Hawk still around. I haven't seen it in a long time (couple of years maybe). I think the shot of Tornado 078 would be my pick of the bunch.

Whereabouts in the Lakes did you go? I've done Wales a few times but would like to do the Lakes next.

Cheers folks! hbxov, I was around Thirlmere Reservoir. The first day's photos were taken from Dunmail Raise and the second day's from Great Howe.

Had a challenging 2 days with the light always changing, quite a few shots got binned because of noise but I've got a plan for next time I get there, hopefully this month..

At this rate all we will have left is a few Dominie's and Hawks.

So, I'm curious. Does the RAF and friends always fly those known paths? Or do people call them and ask if any low level is scheduled to ensure it's not a bust?

They do use the same routes i think, with the lake district + mach loop being 2 of the most well known/photographed. Also there is no schedule so you will get blank days, thankfully Ive never had one but i have had a day with just one hawk pass at 3pm (had been sat on the hill for 5 hours..). You forget days like those when your blessed with 2 days of good traffic like i was.

EAF331 MadDog, there's quite a few low flying areas in the UK, but very few where fast jets get down to 250 - 100 feet (operational low flying or OLF). These low flying routes tend to be away from major civic centers and flat areas, so you tend to see more jets in wales, the lakes and northumberland/scotland.

for more.
