The 'download only' is no big deal for most now but I just hope that they can make it pay so that we do actually get the expansions.

Yes...further expansion into the SOW series will depend on sales of SOW BOB as the developers has hinted on more than one occasion.

A very nice update. I think the grass-textures still look quite blurry; if you look at the rail-way-line the base texture looks quite low-res, but then again this is a 'low' send system, so if Oleg is basing this on current systems, I'd love to be able to see this sort of detail at low-settings! biggrin

Personally I doubt anyone flying the sim will ever notice slightly blurry railway line foundations, or the appearance of too many panels on the noes of the hurricane. People who love taking screenshots etc may notice, but its not a game of screenshots. wink

True, but I always thought SoW was meant to set new standards? I only say that as I would have thought that SoW would excel in all areas...

Hopefully the SOW series will eventually excel in all areas, when computers are powerfull enough to accept all the detail the SOW engine can throw at it. At this point the developers are just trying to get the sim out the door. IF the first addition to the SOW series sells well we might eventually see a completely cinematic series.

Oleg mentioned that they left out fences along railwaylines due to grapic limitations/pc power.

There is no question SoW will grow into, over the years, what many think it will be upon release, simply due to pc limitaions.

Edit: Reailway banks was also mentioned over at 1C, someone wondered if that wasnt a good canidate for tesselation. Personally, id like my gpu/cpu to do more important things than rendering something that i wont even see, litteraly, from 1000, or even a 100 feet. Very nice for scren shots, but thats it. Maby in the future when SoW developes to a full online war maby?

When I look at everything again especially those new steam engines I can start to imagine what a person could do with this sim as a movie maker. I think things would look pretty good.

I remember thinking about the potential for this when I first saw the initial ideas from Oleg and realised that it could be made so that you could play the part of the engine driver or flak gunner, tank driver or ships gunner etc and not just flying planes. It could end up as sim within a sim with bolt on additions depending on what you want. A lot of this will also depend on how much is opened up to third party modders too I guess.

I agree...Oleg has hinted more than once that the SOW engine could easily expand into a combined services sim. BUT that probably won't happen until most of the Air theaters are done.

See? That's the problem. SoW IS setting new standards and is excelling. It's just not meeting many peoples fantasies.

Yes, I agree. My fantasies were set by Oleg when he said the textures would be photo-realistic and I'd be in for a cinematic expereince. This may be so on release, but in some areas I have yet to see the screenshots show this in a few areas (just a few areas).
It's just my opinion though wink

We shall see. Looking at the latest two flight sims I've bought I feel photo realism was a statement of over achievement by Oleg. Who knows what Direct X 10 or 11 will show? Further, several years down the line I suspect things will look even more realistic.

As good as I think RoF looks, it's far from the idea of photo-realism. Black Shark looks great too, but..... well you get the idea. I don't know how anyone would expect complete photo realism and still have a working simulation. Not with today's technology. That's why I said people's expectation is different than the reality we see posted here.

Compared to IL2 (and I know Oleg didn't state this) SoW does look photo-realistic - within a game environment that is. Is it picture perfect? Honestly? No. But I myself don't expect to hold up a picture of the channel and have it match detail for detail Oleg's game.

It's pretty darn good. No complaints from me..... but it's not what I would call photo realistic (at least what I perceive photo realism to mean in real life).

Looking at that Spitfire picture released on Friday, I'm highly impressed with the skin, deformation of the sheet metal, the lighting etc. Viewing the progression of updates, I suspect we'll see more improvements as release date draws near.

True photo realism? Not yet. But so far I'm pretty satisfied with Oleg's refrigerator art.

Immaculate attention to detail for effect and weathering on the aircraft and vehicles etc? absolutely.. but anyone who believes they are going to see actual photo realism in the game are really kidding themselves..
With what we have seen already it's far in advance of IL2, yet there is constant complaining it's not good enough. The man can't do right for doing wrong in some peoples eyes.. just don't know how he puts up with it.

That's internet mate. Need to learn to live with it.
I am the one who doubt whether this SOW playable on then state of the art PC will be out in MY life time at all or not.

My immediate wish is to be able to fly in realistically foreseeable future a Hornet (carrier based naval aviation) sim with graphics and details as good as those from DCS.

Good point mate, but if Oleg has said (recently) that this stuff can be possible, it does get your hopes up. A bit like your Mum saying you'll get a motorbike for christmas and you get a pedal-bike.
