I started playing this last night and man, what a fantastic game this has been so far. Please keep this spoiler free for now since I know a lot of you here have finished this game already. The story and voice acting so far has been fantastic but I am a little bit disappointed that the character and inventory screens have been a bit over-simplified compared to the way it was in the first Mass Effect. The graphics look stunning and are a big improvement over the first Mass Effect. I looked up the voice actors on IMDB for this game and it's quite impressive. Martin Sheen, Michael Hogan, Tricia Helfer, Keith David and Seth Green are some of those that I recognized.

Do you play with a brand new character, or did you import your character from the first one?

I played the game twice, at first with a brand new character, the second time with my imported one. It does have an effect on the storyline.

I imported my character. I noticed that even though my character was level 49 it started back at level 1 for ME 2. I assume that is supposed to happen.

I might give this a look when I've finished StarCraft II. Everyone seems to think it's great!

I haven't played ME2 yet, but if I remember correctly your character had to be at least lvl 50 to notice any benefit as far as stats or anything. You were reset to lvl 1, but given extra gear and credits.

All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the corps!

Damn, I just missed the cutoff then! Ah well, the game has been fun as heck so far and I just finished conversing with Captain Bailey on the Citadel who is voiced by Michael Hogan. I just pretended it was Colonel Tigh talking to me the whole time. smile

Here's a tip, some of the funniest scenes in the game happen with the Renegade option.

Thanks for this little hint!! I've played through the game once but not as Renegade and caught a few funny comments but I'll have to play again, it's well worth it!

I've noticed the Mass Effect games have a lot of ethical gray areas. In game terms that means that it's often not clear which dialogue options will be considered renegade and which ones will be considered paragon. It's quite different from the Knights of the Old Republic games were all the actions were clearly Light side or Dark side. For now I'm going mostly the paragon route but next time I play ME 2 I'll mostly go renegade.

Hey PM, glad to see you got into the next installment of this great franchise! I agree with you that I sort of missed the inventory screens and some of the more minute details of ME1 when I picked up this one but all of it went away quite quickly once I realized I didnt have to get a migraine managing my damned inventory.

Yes the game is slightly simplified but also makes for more of a stress free experience. Takes away the tedium of nutty inventory management. Plus your armor looks uber cool, you can add upgrades to it. Same goes for the weapons.

Ive played the series as paragon, one of these days might get the renegade itch and do it again lol.

I wasn't expecting this to be my type of thing. But, so many people have been raving about it. So, decided to give it a try.
Haven't been this pleasantly surprised with a game since Bioshock. It's brilliant, really.
I enjoy the freedom of movement. The ability to go wherever you want to, and explore a bit. Loved that about Bioshock, also.
A "not to be missed" game. And I'm not even half way through, yet.

So what exactly makes it better than Mass Effect 1?

Better graphics and better feel and mechanics during combat come to mind. The quality of the voice acting, story and characters are just as good as the first Mass Effect IMHO.

That's the chick from Chuck right? Her character in the game "Miranda" even looks like her but with dark hair instead of blonde. She's smoking hot.

Yeah... and of course she has her natural Australian accent in the game.

They are releasing mass Effect 2 on the PS3 with all the DLC included... whoohoo! Was going to wait to but that for the PC with the GOTY edition was released and I think I can wait until Jan 2011 to play it on my PS3 on my big screen.

I'm a PC gamer exclusively so I'll have to pay for the DLC if I want it.

I've put over 15 hours into ME 2 so far and I have enjoyed it immensely.

Got my 'birthday' copy. Haven't even installed yet, as I know I need some 'down time' to really enjoy it.

Enjoyed the first one pretty much.

You can easily play it in spurts. I did a lot of that. Play for 20 minutes and stop. Play for 30 minutes and stop. In my old age, my gaming stamina is drifting off.
