Didn't want to dilute the interesting conversation going on in the ice cream thread, but...
I have few, true, addictions now, but milkshakes are one of them.

Double malt, double chocolate - bring it on!

Sonic strawberry shake, with huge chunks of strawberries that you have to eat with a spoon and so thick you never know if the shake will come up the straw or if the vacuum will suck your lungs out.

My favorite has always been vanilla. However, it's difficult to find milkshakes made with real vanilla.

Piper, Beach, Coasty- what's that place across the road from Sliding Rock up in the NC mountains? Dolly's, right? Best milkshake in the world, bar none. Go for the cherry or blueberry cheesecake. biggrin

Dear oh dear ..... Quick tip guys - Americans do not know how to make milkshakes. You have to travel to the outside world to find a country that knows how to make good ones.

I don't know about that. Hoffman's in Westminster, Md makes quite a good one. Only they don't milk the cows on premises like they do in some countries ( WinkNGrin ).

Anyway, I digress. My first job was in a burger joint and I was assigned to make milkshakes. Well, I followed my instructions to the letter, 2 scoops of vanilla, a reasonable portion of chocolate syrup, milk to 3/4 from the top of the (paper) cup, put that cup under the mixer blade, pushed up, locked it into the guide/safty switch, moved it from side to side to mix the shake, a little left, a little right, push forward, pull back toward me. And promptly cut that cup in two sending the contents out to coat the entire kitchen in sticky brown mess. Oh yes, my shirt had a 6' brown stripe across my middle that began to smell later in the day. Well, it actually ended up ok. I scrubbed the entire kitchen giving me extra hours and, made the next shake and hundreds more without an accident.

Unfortunately most fast food places here sell shakes made from a liqid mix that freezes in a machine and is nothing like a handmade one. Nothing at all, but there are our local ice cream parlors that sill make everything from scratch. Um good, especially when it is as hot as it is today. wave

Yes, for years.
To get a good milkshake I nearly had to do it myself. If I didn't I almost invariably ended up with some kind of thickshake.

Contest on! If you can you figure a way to divert to RDU...we could swap shakes, then go to VIR to catch a race (http://www.virnow.com/)

Do you mean milk shakes or frappes?

Where I live a milk shake is milk, syrup (mmm chocolate) and sometimes malt, then it is mixed on a milk shake blender.

A frappe on the other hand is milk, syrup of your choice, icecream and then mixed on a blender. Sometimes malt is added, but I was never a fan of malted icecream so I forego that.

I prefer frappes. My favorite is called a black and white frappe. It's vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Not too strong on the chocolate flavour, and not too strong on the vanilla.

I'll +1 on that as well- it's almost as good as Dolly's, and one of the reasons I'm looking forward to stopping through Chapel Hill next month. biggrin

There's sure a lot tough talk in this thread but where are your milkshake recipes?!?!? I think a round of in-house testing is in order! BURP!
cheers

P.S. Here's my current formula:

2 - 3 large scoops vanilla ice cream
about a cup of milk (maybe less depending how thick you want)
2- 3 tablespoons Hershey's chocolate syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 shot of Bailey's Irish Cream or Kahlua (depending on preference)

Blend until smooth, and if you're going to impress, top with whipped cream, add some chocolate shavings and top with a cherry.
