Wow,

I would not have any problems at all to buy this version of il-2. But I am very envious that craterman already got this version. My modded Il-2 version is miles away from that one. Look only at the planes. Never saw such convincing plane 3d models.

To be honest, at this stage I can see where Craterman is coming from, certainly if you are taking advantage of some of the mods available for IL2. The updates do have a tendancy to look like an update for IL2 rather than a revolutionary new sim, at this stage, no doubt in DX11 it will be a whole new story.

The plane models and lighting are better, but the clouds, tracers, water, smoke trails all look very familiar to me. Maybe I'm expecting too much difference. I really would expect more prop wash effect on the smoke tails and maybe a little movement in the cockpits also.

Have taken screenshots from this tiny (25 second including intro screen!) video and the differences become more obvious, but they are subtle.

The difference is huge because of the lighting effects and higher details that allow for more curved realistic lines. This is an excellent WIP with an upside. Every aspect of IL-2 will be much improved with even more features. When you see the sim as a whole I'm sure your pessimistic attitudes toward SOW will be much improved. Of course there is no cure for the pessimist, but it can be alleviated somewhat. wink

I want to see 300+ formations and fighters wheeling all over the sky leaving vapour trails! That would be a revolutionary step forward. I agree the models are beautiful but the overall tone is very IL2.

Well, i think that graphically it looks way way better that IL-2, and much more closer to photorealistic that any combat sim out there.
About the overall feeling of the video, i agree it "feels" or "seems" like an improved IL-2, but my question would be: Is that a bad thing?

You guys say its not revolutionary as you expected. Well, what did you expected? What its revolutionary for you?. With this videos we can only "judge" the graphics, and they are hugely better that any version of il2, and also IMO that any of the latest realistic sims out there.

About the clouds and huge bomber formations, obviously we will have to wait more to see if the engine cand handle it. But some of you are judging for what its not being showed and want to see NOW, than what its being really showed.

I can't believe how anyone can miss the huge differences in how the light plays on the aircraft as they move? With some finetuning of the skins and colors it will be hard to tell the differences between this and the real thing. Man, skinning these aircraft will really be something! smile

That's the hard part about judging from screen captures. Sometimes I think a shot that's different from what we're used to seeing may seem new and exciting, but not altogether more realistic. Case in point: the high contrast shots from Birds of Prey. The shadowy side of the aircraft, IMHO, are too dark. The eye can see detail in the shadows better than portrayed in the game unless the subject is strongly and more directly backlit. The game visuals may have a high dynamic range, but if not properly applied, can result in stark images that don't convey that suspension of disbelief.

I remember a while ago there were a few videos around from the very talented (I think) Japanese guy who does the CGI stuff, a low level pass by some Mosies, a pair of Japanese fighters coming into land, etc. Which looks almost totally real.

Maybe that is what people are expecting? Of course we would all love that to death but maybe a reality check is in order, it aint gonna be like that yet.

Personally, I think it is looking really nice, the beauty is in the detail, which is easy to overlook in the small scenes we have seen so far. Someone already mentioned how good the shadow of the Do-17 canopy looked on the engine Nacelle, I mean come on that is superb. The clouds, the water reflections, the aircraft surfaces, the people inside the aircraft all look tons better to me. I cant wait for this to come out.

I am just glad Oleg and crew are providing these regular updates, the guy is a genius and to know progress is happening is enough to keep me happy.

Salute Oleg!

Yep that's why I took the screenies, because the devil is in the detail of this little vid.

I don't know if i should cry or laugh at the people who claim it looks like IL2.

Not only does it look light years ahead in lightning, models , ploy count , effects, water reflections etc but you've also to consider engine capabilities, features of the game itself , aero dynamics and overall realism.

But sure i don't mind if the crybabys stay in IL2, sure are some nasty nice mods for IL2 but they do not enhance the engine for IL2 anywhere near this , it's just pure bs talk.

In one shot of the movie you can see the shadow of the canopy framing on the engine cowling of the Do-17. I love that.

I suspect that no matter how good SoW: BoB is, it will be bashed and attacked, particularly by the IL-2 modding crowd.

They'll look at it as competition to their work, which is silly but nonetheless true.

Can we get a pool for when after release the first "don't buy BoB, just download the mods - they're better!" post will be?

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

Some of the guys complaining may just be looking for a reaction from the forum users, too.
