Well a target range is normally a flat area so pilots and gunners can concentrate on targets and weapon usage, being flat the crew doesn't have to look for mountains or valleys. Is also clear of most of the trees if not all, and on the ground are big lines marking distances to targets that are normally placed at the end of the line. I can't post pics of the real ranges as those are military secure areas, but we use a target range terrain in Strike Fightes that is inspired in the real deal.
This is how a range look:
And the explanation:
There are plenty of different targets so pilots and gunners can train, targets like ¿"targets"?
Buildings:
Vehicles in convoy:
SAM sites:
Hidden vehicles:
Simulated airfields:
And bomb targets:
The targets ranges in Sims can help the users to learn the basics, weapon useage, weapon usage...
I feel that they are very very useful, it should be easy to do as is a flat map with not too many objects.
Another idea is to have a FARP near the target so at same time we practice landings and take offs, we can get the chopper rearmed so more time to train before reloading the target range mission.
Just my two cents.
