As the thread title says what do people's consider their favorite gun loadout in Strike Fighters? I thought it would be an interesting topic.

Mine I think are the four 20mm M39's carried by the F-100 and the add-on F-107A. Probably because the tracer effect reminds my of the multiple guns on the fighters in some of my old space shooter favorites like Wing Commander and FreeSpace.

Lately I'm flying with lots of different planes in WoE.

It's a very nice question actually.

I've found meself fond of the A10 and A6.

But since the A6 comes only with gravity-led payload (except maybe for a Gunpod but, c'mon...) I really have to go with the A10 Avenger. That gun is a Wrath of Gods.

Gotta love it. ^_^

But for complete honesty is the M61 Vulcan that inspire me the most respect.

Can I call it a tie?

SUU-16/-23 on the F-4D. While not perfect back in the real days, it works well enough in the sim.

I kind of like the 4 gun armament on the F-100 also, may be just familiarity with it having flown the F-100 a lot over the last few months.

Any aircraft loaded with a Vulcan 20mm cannon is great to me.It´s a chainsaw, not a gun.

Yes, latest missions I've flying the F-105 with Vulcan. A good weapon. I seemed to have better luck in slashing attacks against Il-28s with the F-100, could be that it is just more maneuverable but the dispersion pattern of the 4 20s seemed to make a hit more certain.

A dialed down 20MM Vulcan so that it creates more damage than blowing the target up. You get all the sparks and debris and usually smoke and down to the ground they go.

How much did you dial down the bursting charge in the gun editor? On another note I also happen to like the twin 30mm's on the Mirage III.

I put the warhead weight to 1 g. Same I use for the CF18.

After reading Thud Ridge on a trip, the author had said that their kills usually led to pieces coming off and lots of smoke as the MiG would go down. The target gets hit with enough rounds and its coming down. I understand the experts will rail that the science is that a aircraft should be hit so many times with a certain caliber and the ....ya know?

My last mission I bushwhacked 4 Parani MiG-17s with the F-105, on their way back to base or landing, the Vulcan just vaporized them.

I tested your warhead weight setting on both the M61A1 and the Mk.12. My F-16A had a fit downing a Mig-17. I think he went down only because I put 17 rounds right up his tail pipe.

I also shot an F-8 dry and another in the flight expended over over 300 rounds during a fight with two of us scoring on a Mig-21 with at lest 30 hits and failed to down him. He was missing all his control surfaces and a missile rail on his left wing and was not evading anymore but we were out of ammo. Fished him off with an AIM-9. Kicking myself for not snapping a screen shot of the damage.

I reset my guns to default settings.

Edit: I forgot to mention a rather fun gun kill I got the other day. I was doing an Anti-ship strike when we got jumped by Mig-21's. I was puling off the target ship after dumping some Rockeyes on it when this Mig-21 goes after my number two who was making a bomb run. The Mig is parallel to me on my left diving on a reciprocal course and I am climbing. All I had to do was bank left and I was inside his turn, in his plane of motion with altitude advantage. I was in an Israeli A-4F with twin 30mm's.

I had a good one the other day also, was cruising around the target area in the ole thud after hitting the target. Hear some guy from another flight screaming about someone on his tail, and there ahead is an F-8 climbing with a MiG-17 on his tail, zoomed up right on his arse and blasted him. Nice to save a friendly...

A real man just need a wrench or a spanner to throw to the other guy with the fan driven kite while flying side by side.

Or a throwing-revolver.

The A-4 is such a wonderful dogfighter. If it only had an afterburner...

WTF? Do you want to send him a love letter or letter of apology before you shoot him down or what? "Unpersonal"...like there was a "Sorry ole' chap" written on every bullet... biggrin

I can't find the clip of the video from Vietnam. Its at Craig Bakers Thud site.

The video shows a F105 firing at a MiG17 and another F105 descends right through the line of fire with hit taking multiple hits behind the canopy. I think it survived and the MiG didn't. The pilot said he never saw the 105 until he looked at the gun cam. I think the pilot was Dave Waldrop?

The one titled Thunderchief. Go towards the end of part 8 and the start of part 9. I thin it was at the end of part 8 you see a MiG17 getting hit.

Well, with a Spandau you are close enough that he can see you wave goodbye...

Twin Vickers, or a Vickers and a Lewis will do. I'd use a blunderbuss if I could.

Spad XIII or SE5a? Does not sound very effective against a MIG-17. I accidentally took a 7.62mm gunpod on an F-4 once. You need something with a little more punch. Smile2

Appreciated the A-4Cs twin 20mm guns yesterday. Two hits equals one (MiG-17) kill. biggrin
